Re: 215 Mathews Street, Fort Collins, CO – Lead Waste Stream via TCLP Sampling Report
(CEH: 4826.14)
Dear Mr. Oldemeyer:
The following report addresses the results of one sample we collected for Mr. Oldemeyer to
characterize the lead content with respect to determining whether the waste was a lead hazardous
waste.
The sample (111814PJ-30) was collected from the building prior to renovation. The contents
were plaster/drywall, lumber, roofing, wood trim, flooring, cabinetry/misc/wiring,
doors/windows, and floor stone/concrete components.
The sample was analyzed by ALS Environmental using SW846-1311-/7420 for lead (the
Toxicity Characteristic Leacheate Procedure (TCLP)). The sample contained lead at a level
above the Hazardous Waste definition for lead of 5 mg/kg (mg/l).
A grab sample TCLP contained a lead content that appeared to require that the whole house
would have to be disposed of as a hazardous waste. This would be very costly (as much as
$10,000 or more). We recommend repeating this test with a more accurate method, facilitated by
XRF pre-testing. The cost of a re-test would be approximately $500, but would have at least a
50% chance of allowing the waste to be re-classified as non-hazardous.
Laboratory reports with the pertinent results are attached. Please feel free to contact me if you
have any questions or need further assistance.

activity is greater than the reported MDC.
D - DER is greater than Control Limit
Inorganics:
B - Result is less than the requested reporting limit but greater than the instrument method detection limit (MDL).
E - The reported value is estimated because of the presence of interference. An explanatory note may be included in the narrative.
U or ND - Indicates that the compound was analyzed for but not detected.
M - Duplicate injection precision was not met.
N - Spiked sample recovery not within control limits. A post spike is analyzed for all ICP analyses when the matrix spike and or spike
duplicate fail and the native sample concentration is less than four times the spike added concentration.
Z - Spiked recovery not within control limits. An explanatory note may be included in the narrative.
* - Duplicate analysis (relative percent difference) not within control limits.
Organics:
U or ND - Indicates that the compound was analyzed for but not detected.
E - Analyte concentration exceeds the upper level of the calibration range.
B - Analyte is detected in the associated method blank as well as in the sample. It indicates probable blank contamination and warns the data user.
J - Estimated value. The result is less than the reporting limit but greater than the instrument method detection limit (MDL).
A - A tentatively identified compound is a suspected aldol-condensation product.
X - The analyte was diluted below an accurate quantitation level.
* - The spike recovery is equal to or outside the control criteria used.
+ - The relative percent difference (RPD) equals or exceeds the control criteria.
G - A pattern resembling gasoline was detected in this sample.
M - A pattern resembling motor oil was detected in this sample.
D - A pattern resembling diesel was detected in this sample.
