Building Character: Horizontal massing, Reduction in scale, low slope roofs, indoor outdoor connection, overlapping shapes, compatible materials
Horizontal massing & reduction in scale:
The 1st story siding element provides a horizontal base for the building. The upper story material masses and window patterns strengthen the
horizontal. The low horizontal stone components extend into the landscape. Roof elements at lower levels of the building in conjunction with
material changes reduce the visual mass of the buildings and strengthen the horizontal lines.
Low slope roofs: The 2:12 pitch roofs complement the neighboring ranch houses, keep scale of building down, and strengthen horizontal lines.
Cross gables with shed roof elements highlight changes in mass to reduce the visual scale of the buildings.
Indoor outdoor connection: Interior building elements extend to the exterior through windows located on inside and outside corners. Tall
windows allow ceiling/roof lines to visually extend from inside to outside to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor. Building features extend
into the landscape, physically connecting the building to the site, and landscape features reinforce the building extensions into the landscape.
Compatible materials: The materials used are prevalent in mid-century ranch style homes, including board siding, stucco, stone, and glass. The
layering and placement of the materials is designed to reduce the visual scale of the buildings.
