re: Drainage of Alley,
Oakwood School
Fort Collins, Colorado
Project No. 9311.00
Dear Glenn:
Northern Engineering is pleased to submit this Drainage Letter
for your review. It represents a study of the existing and
proposed runoff characteristics of an alley south of the property
located at 1401 W. Mountain Avenue, Fort Collins, Colorado. An
existing building would be converted to a private school. The only
changes that will effect the drainage of the site are due to the
asphalt paving of the alley adjacent to the property. Presently,
the alley is paved with gravel and drains east to the gutter on
McKinley Street. An inverted crown section (17' wide) would be
constructed adjacent to the south property line and match the
existing grades at each end.
Using the Rational Method to quantify the drainage flows, the
only parameter that would change is the runoff coefficient, C.
Storm drainage criteria for the city of Fort Collins gives for
gravel drives, C? = 0.50, and for asphalt drives, C3 = 0.95, which
would cause a 90 percent increase in flow. Since the existing
peak runoff from the alley for a 100-year storm is only 0.16 cfs,
the new peak runoff would be 0.31 cfs. Translating this into terms
of the maximum change in depth of flow in the gutter on McKinley
Street, no more than 0.03 feet increase in depth would be expected.
If you should have any questions or comments as you review
this letter, please feel free to contact me at your earliest
convenience.
Sincerely,
YD-RTHERN ENGINEERING SERVICES, INC.
