Aller-Lingle Architects 748 Whalers Way, Suite E-200 Fort Collins, CO 80525 Re: Fire Station 12 Dear Mick, In the comments we received back from the Planning Department they indicated we would need to request a variance for the width of the driveway for Fire Station 12. They asked we justify why the drive should be the size it is shown. The -major reason we have requested the drive be this wide is so we can have sufficient turning radius to pull the fire apparatus into the driveway and allow them to back into to station. Without the tuming radius currently indicated on.the plans, we would. need to stop traffic on Country Club Road while we back into the station from the street. With the amount of traffic expected to increase on Country Club Road and the rate of speed vehicles tend to travel in.this area, we feel this would present a serious hazard to both the public and our personnel. Our other reasoning for requesting a variance is this station will have the capability to house three pieces of fire apparatus. When the station goes into service we will initially be responding with both an engine and a water tender. Additional response units are anticipated in the future. When two or three pieces of fire apparatus are responding from the same station, the width of the front drive becomes a safety factor. The wider the drive, the more room the apparatus has to maneuver and the additional width offers a higher degree of safety. The Poudre Fire Authority is in the business of protecting the safety of the citizens we serve. It is our feeling a variance for the width of the drive is a significant consideration when it comes to the safety of the public and our employees.
