Some traffic concerns met

A long -discussed shopping cen-
ter and grocery store on Harmony
Road might become a reality,
even though nearby residents say
they are still worried about how
traffic from the center would af-
fect their neighborhood.
The city Planning and Zoning
Board gave initial approval Mon-
day night to a plan for a 115,000-
square-foot shopping center an-
chored by a Safeway store. The
center would be on the north side
of Harmony Road between Mc -
Murry Avenue and Wheaton
Drive and bordered on the north
by Monte Carlo Drive.
Safeway officials and city plan-
ners have agreed to install land-
scaping and traffic -slowing de-
vices, including speed bumps, on
neighboring streets. While mem-
bers of the Golden Meadows
Homeowners Association thanked
Safeway officials for listening to
their concerns, they also said
more needs to be done to reduce
the potential for cut -through traf-
fic in their neighborhood.
"We cannot accept our residen-
tial streets becoming arterials for
shopping -center traffic," said resi-
dent Ken Allen.
The homeowners asked for a
traffic light and left -turn lanes at
