This species occurs in seasonally moist soils and wet meadows, and prefers partially shaded open glades or pastures and meadows in full sunlight. Based on information gleaned from this wetland delineation, it has been , ascertained, that suitable habitat is not found at the Horstooth East site, and species that are commonly associated with the orchid are not present. No further survey -for S. diluvialis is required. If you have any questions or require additional information, please call me at 482-7008. Sincerely, CEDAR CREEK ASSOCIATES, INC. Karen A. Schneller-McDonald Associate Soil mapped onsite by the Soil Conservation Service (Soil Survey of Larimer County, 1980) is predominantly Map Unit 35, Fort Collins loam, 1-3% slope. This deep, well -drained soil is formed in alluvium, and is found on terraces and fans. This is not a hydric soil. This parcel contains one wetland area, in the southeast corner. A depressional area is partially surrounded by young trees and large shrubs; species include Russian olive (Blaeagnus angustifolia), plains cottonwood (Populus sargentii), and willow (Salix spp.). The wetland is found within this area, where willows are the " dominant vegetation and the soil surface is damp. Sample site 3 is at the edge of the wetland, with mostly willows and a few alders (Alnus tenuifolia), and a small percentage of encroaching upland vegetation comprised of thistles (Cirsium spp.) and white sweetclover (Melilotus alba). The soil is saturated at a depth of 12 inches; soil color is 7.5YR 4/2 with bright mottles and a high sand content. The wetland boundary generally follows the willows; the central portion of the depressional area is almost entirely comprised of white sweetclover and thistle and is not considered to be wetland. Sample site 4, within the wetland boundary, is slightly different in vegetative composition; dominant species are willow and bulrush (Scirpus americanus); additional species present in small numbers are white sweetclover, smooth brome (Bromus inermis), thistle and cottonwood. Soil is saturated at 10 inches; color is lOYR 3/2 with moderate mottling and a higher clay content. The outer edge of the bank of the irrigation ditch was also examined for the presence of wetlands, since sedges (Carex spp.) were abundant in some areas. Small patches of reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) are found within the ditch. However, at sample sites 1 and 2, no evidence of wetland hydrology is found, and soils are very dry. Mottling is absent or slight, and soil matrix color is 10YR 4/3 and 4/4. Upland weedy species, primarily thistles, are present along the ditch in varying densities, interspersed with patches of sedges and some beardless wheatgrass (Agropyron inerme) and wheat (Triticum aestivum). Thus, the ditch system outside the.bank-to-bank area is considered to be nonwetland because it does not meet wetland criteria for vegetation, soils and hydrology. The remainder of this site, a mowed field, is also upland because of vegetation, soil and hydrologic characteristics. Dominant vegetation is smooth brome and thistle; these are upland species. Vegetative cover ranges from approximately 85-100%. This parcel consists of approximately 0.75 acre of open land adjacent to Timberline Road just south of Horsetooth Road, Fort Collins. The property is bounded by Big Horn Drive on the north, Timberline Road on the east, Automation Way on the west, and a small irrigation ditch on the south. Surrounding land uges are commercial and residential development. The wetland survey and delineation follows the guidelines for a "routine on -site determination" as developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Wetlands Delineation Manual of 1987. This survey was conducted to fulfill the requirements of Section 404 of the Clean Water Act regarding delineation of wetlands prior to potential development activities. Wetland delineation was completed using the techniques and methods specified for 'routine on -site delineations' in the publication Corps of Engineers Wetlands Delineation Manual (1987). Following the analysis of site characteristics, the wetland/upland boundary and sample points (.S1-S4) were flagged with fluorescent orange tape and pin flags. The results of the field work are summarized in the following paragraphs. Copies of the data sheets completed in the field are included with this letter. A map which displays the approximate delineation line is also included; please note that it is not to scale, but is intended to show an approximation of wetland boundaries and sample site locations.
