City of Fort Collins Stormwater
700 Wood Street
Fort Collins, CO 86550
Mr. Schlueter;
This letter is intended to address the drainage. associated with the widening of
Buckingham from the intersection at I" Street to a point approximately 1700' east of this
intersection. The width of the existing street varies with dive over curb on a portion of
the south side and a borrow ditch on the north side.
It is proposed to widen Buckingham from I" Street to 3`d Street to a full major collector
width (50') and, for the remainder of the street improvements, widen to approximately
44'. In the first section of the improvements, the runoff will be collected in vertical curb
and gutter and conveyed to two low points. From these low points, water is conveyed in
concrete channels north into the existing detention pond. Concrete channels are used
instead of inlets because of an elevation conflict with the Coy Ditch piping. In the
second section of the improvements, the runoff will flow north to a bioswale located
between the north edge of pavement and the sidewalk. This bioswale will convey the
runoff east to Lemay Avenue. At this point the water is conveyed south under
Buckingham and eventually to the Poudre River.
For the first section of Buckingham, no additiona4 .detention is being provided at this
time. Detention for this street will be provided when the adjacent site develops. For the
second section of street, no detention is provided because of the long travel time and the
configuration of the bio swale which encourages percolation into the soil as the water
travels. This bio swale also provides water quality enhancement of the street runoff prior
to conveyance downstream.
The bio Swale will be constructed to be 1' deep. with 4:1 side slopes and a 0.4%
longitudinal slope. The top..,10" of soil will be sandy loam and the plantings in the bio
swale will be native species that tolerate sandy soil. The maintenance of the bio swale
will be the responsibility of the adjacent property owner. A variance to allow this bio
Swale has been submitted to the Engineering Department.
