ng a third Fort Collins store,
ust three blocks south of the
olgrado State University
!ampus.
An Albertson's official de-
Jined Friday to comment on
the plans. However, represen-
tatives for the grocery chain
a Scheduled to meet with
planning officials March
28 to discuss plans for a
50,000-square-foot store.
The site under consideration
Growth
is at the southwest corner of
Prospect Road and Shields
Street.
"I'd really rather not com-
ment at this point," said Chris
Carley, a real estate develop-
ment executive at the Albert-
son's regional office in Denver.
"It's a little preliminary."
A 50,000-square-foot store is
a standard size for Albertson's,
said Kurt Prinslow, a Denver
engineer who is working on
the site plan for Albertson's.
The Boise, Idaho -based com-
pany has 39 stores in Colo-
rado, including two in Fort
Collins, at 3660 S. Mason St.
and 731 S. Lemay Ave.
The proposed store has been
the subject of talk recently in
the west -side neighborhood.
"We had heard the rumor,
but we hadn't known for cer-
tain," said Emily Smith, an of-
ficer for the Prospect -Shields
Neighborhood Association.
Smith said neighbors would
be concerned about traffic and
visual obstruction at the inter-
section.
"That's the only remaining
view from an, intersection in
the inner city that's straight
to the mountains," Smith said.
"That's been a concern of
Vurs."
Albertson's is the, nation's
sixth -largest food retailer. In
1991, the company announced
a five-year, $2.7 billion mod-
ernization and expansion plan,
during which it hopes to build
250 new stores.
Plenty of interest
Albertson's proposal for a
new grocery store at Pros-
pect Road and Shields
Street is one of three mar-
kets on the drawing board in
Fart Collins. King Soopers is
considering a new store on
East Hannony Road be-
tween Wheaton Drive and
McMurray Avenue, and
Toddy's is planning for a
store at North College
enue and Willox Lane.
