Disposal m No: 1 3/1/98 edes Issue Dated 6/1/89 Mortenson supports the protection of the environment The handling of waste from any of our operations must comply with local, state, aad federal laws, as well as with recommended practice. Mortenson will get any permits and licenses that are needed. Work Practices The best way to control the accumulation of construction chemical waste is to bring to the job only as much as will be used. Use all of a chemical purchased for an operation on that operation, or return the excess to the supplier. Always try to use what is left in open containers on their intended operations. For example, use extra sealing on a slab to consume what is left in the drum. Disposal When there are leftover residual chemicals on the job, use the proper disposal route an procedure. These might include: • Transfer to another local ,yob that can use the rest of the material. • Contracted for transfer to a local waste disposal. Hazardous Waste Tne following is a partial list of chemicals that should be handled as hazardous waste: Waste oils - form or vehicle • Concrete hardeners and sealers • Acids and bases (e.g., muriatic or limes) • Disinfectants (e.g., chlorine) • Paints • Heavy metals - residuals of stripping operations • Fuels • Solvents and cleaners • Pesticides and herbicides OMA Mateo Company 1"s W=Aaois. Note: Materials normally used by Mortenson (concrete cure, form oil, etc.) can be transferred from one job to another. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) The use of PPE is the last measure used to protect personnel. Mortenson will eliminate exposure to hazards, use mechanical processes, and take administrative actions before relying on PPE to protect personnel. Use the appropriate PPE to minimize exposure to hazardous chemicals. Refer to the Chapter 27. Fueling Provide a specific place location for the refueling of vehicles. Provide a 20 pound A-B-C fire extinguisher within 10 feet. If a designed fueling tank is used, the tank must have an emergency shut off valve located away from any vehicular traffic. Shut off all motors during refueling. The location must be: • Signed • Diked • Protected from damage • At least 25 feet away from the storage areas VM.& MwWUM cmapanr im "MN M. A. Zero Injury Program 311/ss Duperseues issue u=+ Training Manual 6/1/89 Handling of Hazardous Materials General Safety Precautions Before using hazardous materials, all personnel must be able to identify the materials and be familiar with their hazardous characteristics. Follow personal protective equipment measures noted on the MSDS. als shall be Properly trained per Chapter 2.C. and All personnel handling hazardous materi per OSHA 1926.21(b). Use the materials only for their approved purpose. Avoid storage of excess materials in temporary containers. The Operating Group Safety Director will review and approve all other uses of any hazardous materials not specifically stated. Spills Take all precautions to prevent leaks. Mark all waste containers and keep them in good condition. Report spills promptly. Notify the Operating Group Vice -President and Safety Director if a spill is more than 10 gallons. Transportation Move all hazardous materials from the storage area to the work areas without stopping in unapproved storage areas. (For instance, do not stop at the break truck for a quick snack.) Transport the material only in approved containers. Label the containers properly - am -A. Hazardous Materials A. 311/98 6/1/89 22.A. 3 Keep all hazardous materials in the original container provided by the supplier unless a determined amount of hazardous materials is going to be used for a specific purpose. Ensure that the temporary container is compatible with the hazardous material. Do not accept the hazardous materials from the supplier if: • The container is damaged (e.g., holes, rust, cracks, etc.). • The supplier has used a temporary container. • The labeling has been damaged. Prevent all operations that produce heat, sparks, or increase the chance of fire since some of the hazardous materials emit toxic or harmful gases when burning. Storage Cabinet Meet all applicable codes when using a storage cabinet. Prevent access by non -authorized personnel. Label the cabinets with a list of the contents. ®MA. MMIM C"wwr iss. +'W$CW'U. Management The person responsible for the storage location must: • prevent access from non -authorized personnel. • Comply with all applicable OSHA, NFPA, and Iocal code requirements. • Provide at least one 20 pound A-B-C fire extinguisher within 25 feet. • Prohibit eating, drinking, and smoking in the storage location. • Follow good housekeeping practices. • Limit the amount of hazardous materials storage quantities. For example, it is better to receive five 5-gallon buckets than one 25-gallon drum. No one container may exceed 60 gallon capacity, unless it is specifically designed to handle a larger amount (e.g. gasoline or diesel fueling tank). • Keep on hand the appropriate clean-up materials for each chemical being stored. • Provide proper signage: 1. Identify types of materials. 2. If different materials are stored together, identify the materials and their designated storage spot. 3. Provide proper labeling on all containers, including temporary containers. • Notify proper emergency authorities. • Conduct documented inspections of each storage location at least weekly. Segregation of Materials A competent person will be responsible for determining the proper segregation of hazardous materials and the distance of separation required. Segregate the following materials: • Flammables • Toxins • Oxidants • Reducers • Concentrated acids Water reactives • Peroxides • Pyrophorics • Cylinder gases I. Empty 2. Full eMA. Hazardous Materials Subject & Storage Zero Injury Program Training Manual Hazardous Materials 3"8 d 6/1/89 22.A. -1 1 The purpose of this section is to establish uniform guidelines for the safe storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials. The material in this section is a required safety meeting topic for all personnel who will use, store, or dispose of hazardous materials. Storage of Hazardous Materials Storage Location Conditions Locate the storage location in an area so that: • Materials can be stored safely and securely. • It is away from populated work areas and high traffic areas. • It is away from heat producing activities. • It is large enough to allow the containers to be accessed without damage. • Routes to and from the storage area are free of obstructions. • There is adequate ventilation. • It is not within 100 feet of any building. The location must be diked to contain any spillage. Inside Storage Rooms Construct inside rooms to meet the required fire rating for their use. Electrical equipment must meet the required class and division rating. Provide rooms with ventilation systems. Maintain a minimum on one aisle 3 feet wide at all times. Segregate the materials according to the requirements listed later in this section.
