The enclosure must be three feet clear of the transformer. Such screening will help reduce site clutter and accentuate the building, drive -through lane and menu board. We have seen successful enclosures that are combined with the trash enclosure. For example, the trash enclosure wall could double as the side wall for the enclosure. That way, only a new rear and opposite side wall would need to be constructed. The front would remain open but I recommend low deciduous shrubs three feet clear for aesthetic purposes. Please let me know what your team thinks of these ideas. It is my sincere hope that the team will respond creatively and that this facility will be one of the most outstanding stores in our region. In addition, I would like to pass along suggestions on two other minor issues. First, as we discussed on the phone, I encourage you and the client to consider enhancing the outdoor dining area between Magnolia Street and the north elevation of the building. The purpose of the enhancement would be to promote outdoor dining and pedestrian gathering as a way to add life to the shopping center. Perhaps some of the enhancements could include a low to medium shrub hedge that separates the yard from the street. Or, a low picket or wrought -iron fence could be used. This would contribute to defining an inviting outdoor space. Other ideas include movable furniture, like that found along the sidewalks in our downtown, benches for single diners, newspaper vending, drinking fountain, ashtrays for smokers taking a break and trash containers (minus the "Colonel" logo, of course). This list is not meant to be exhaustive and your team may think of other elements. It is my hope that KFC and Taco Bell will entice the Wal-Mart employee on break/lunch time and that working indoors, these employees will enjoy relaxing in an attractive, well - designed outdoor setting. (If you do not already have in your library, we recommend reading City Comforts, by David Sucher, published by City Comforts Press. This wonderful little book provides many examples and details addressing the pedestrian - oriented environment.) Second, I have enclosed a specification for the transformer pad. Please note that this concrete pad totals about 30 square feet. The transformer can be enclosed or landscaped on three sides with the front remaining open. (Landscaping may be placed in front as long as it is a minimum of three feet clear of the equipment.) 281 North Colle;e Avenue • 110.
