In today's staff review we saw the suggestion of connecting the buildings out to sidewalks
everywhere. I'm usually the one to stab at plans in that way.
This time I was a little slower to stab because I see that they've given some pretty good thought
to the site plan this time. It looks more deliberate.
If those buildings are single loaded, then we've got a special situation here. Front to back units.
Similar to that east Pearl Street thing in Boulder.
The idea of connecting to the Lincoln streetfront in particular looks like a great opportunity
visually and convenience -wise. My concern is that if we just put red lines on the plan and they
just add a concrete sidewalk in response, we could miss the chance for some kind of specially
designed public/private transition as part of the streetfront. It would just take one little trick to
have a nice streetfront for both the public and the residents -- porches, arbors, low walls or
fences, hedges, posts, light posts, I don't know exactly what. But DHM would be capable of
some designing at a nice detail scale that could make this a little better than the "typical"
apartment complex, at relatively little cost.
The nice detail scale also helps with my previous comment about showing the meter banks and
HVAC on the elevations or otherwise show how they will not degrade the everyday living
environment. This can be a dominant characteristic in such a large complex. This level of detail
often appears to be overlooked.

I hope we do not force any kind of ugly structure to support a sidewalk along the (future?) south
driveway. By the way, is that the front of the building? If so, some kind of sidewalk may be
important. It would need special design attention.
