Re: Maple Recreation Center Hazardous Material Impact Analysis
Dear Mr. Shepard,
The swimming pool called "Maple Hill" in its preliminary design phase has
approximately 102,000 gallons of water. The dispenser for disinfectant is a Bio-Lab MA-35FM
chlorinator and it uses 1" tabs. These tabs are a class one oxidizer, the least hazardous of
the oxldizers. Other chemicals used in pools are sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), calcium
chloride used to increase the hardness of the water. Small quantities of muratic acid 35%of
soda ash is used to balance the PH depending if it is high or low.
These chemicals should be kept in an approved paint locker or separated chemical
storage room (closet size). Never store any liquids with dry chemicals and only keep on hand
the quantity of chemical that would be used for the week. As this is a seasonal pool don't
keep excess chemical over the winter.
Class 3 oxidizers will be eliminated as they are the highest risk chemical, also will
make all parties safer and less hazardous to fire departments, in case of emergencies.
