Studies in people
Very few human studies have focused spec6cay on cellular phone towers and cancer risk- In the largest study published to date, British
researchers compared a group of more than 1,000 families of young children with cancer against a smiler group of families of chldrm
without cancer. They found no ink between a mMher's exposure to the towers during pregnancy (based on the distance from the home to
the nearest lower and on the amount of energy gwan off by nearby towers) and the risk of early childhood cancer.
The amount of exposure from Irving near a cal phone tower is typically many times lower than the exposure from using a call phone. About
30 studies have looked at possioie inks between cal phone use and tumors in people. Most studies to date have not found a link between
cal phone use and the development of tumors, although these studies have had some important bMations. This is an area of ache
research. For more etormabon, sae the document, Cellular Phones.
What expert agencies say
The 3 expert agencies that usually classify cancer -causing exposures (carcloogens) — the International Agency for Research on Cancer
(IARC), the National Toxicology Program (NTP), and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — have rat classified cal phone havers
as to their cancer -causing potential.
According to the Word Health Organization:
Considering the very low exposure levels and research results collected to date, there is no convincing scientific evidence that the
weak RF signals from base stations and wireless networks cause adverse health effects.
In commenting on cal phone towers near tortes or schools. the Federal Communications Commission states:
Radehequency emissions from antennas used for cellular and PCS (personal communicatbris service) transmissions result io
exposure levels on the ground that are typically thousands of times below safety limits. These safety limits were adopted by the FCC
lased on the recommendations of expert organizations and endorsed by agencies of the Federal Government responsible for health
and safety. Therefore, [tare's no reason to believe that such towers could constitute a potential health hazard to nearby residents
or students.

Do cellular phone towers cause any other health problems?
Whie high levels of RF waves can cause a warming of body tissues, the energy levels on the ground near a cell phone tower are Far below
the levels needed to cause this effect. Thus far, there is no evidence in published scientific reports that cell phone towers cause any other
health problems.

Do copular phone towns eauo r cancer?
Do cellular phone towers cause cancer?
Some people have expressed concern that living, working, or going to School near a cell phone lower might Increase the risk of cancer or
other health problems. At this time there is very little evidence to support this Idea. In theorythere are some important points that would
argue against cellular phone towers being able to cause cancer.
First, the energy level of radlolrequancy (RF) waves Is relatively low, especialy when compared with the types of radiation that are known to
increase cancer risk, such as gamma rays, x-rays, and ullravolet (UV) light. The energy of RF waves given oft by cal phone towers is not
enough to break chemical bonds In DNA molecules, which is now, these stronger forms of aviation may lead to cancer.
A amend issue has to do wfth wavelength. RF waves have long wavelengths, which can only be concentrated to about an Inch or two In
spe. This makes it unlikely that the energy from RF waves could be concentrated enough to affect Individual cells In the body.
Third, even d RF waves were somehow able to affect cells in the body at higher Wass, the level of RF waves present at ground level Is very
Ow -- well below the recommended limits. Levels of energy from RF waves near ices phone towers are not significantly different then the
background levels of RF radiation In urban areas from other sources, such as radio and television broadcast stations.
For these reasons, most scientists agree test cell phone antennas or toners are unlikely to cause cancer.

In the case of cellular and PCS cell site
transmitters, the FCC's RF exposure guidelines
recommend a maximum permissible exposure
level to the general public of approximately 580
microwatts per square centimeter. This limit is
many times greater than RF levels typically
found near the base of cellular or PCS cell site
towers or in the vicinity of other, lower -powered
cell site transmitters.
Calculations corresponding to a "worst -case"
situation (all transmitters operating
simultaneously and continuously at the
maximum licensed power) show that, in order to
be exposed to RF levels near the FCC's
guidelines, an individual would essentially have
to remain in the main transmitting beam and
within a few feet of the antenna for several
minutes or longer. Thus, the possibility that a
member of the general public could be exposed
to RF levels in excess of the FCC guidelines is
extremely remote.
