Housing: One piece die-cast aluminum with stepped top edge
and integral cooling fins to increase surface area for inductive
component cooling. All hardware is stainless steel. A stainless
steel self-locking stop -arm is provided to hold the lens frame in the
open position while servicing.
Lens Frame Assembly: One piece die-cast aluminum with 1'
minimum thickness around the gasket flange for rigidity. Stainless
steel hinges provided for attachment to the housing. Two stainless
steel thumb latches are recessed into the side corners, concealed
from normal view. The 3/16'thick clear flat or convex tempered glass
lens seals against the reflector flange by a one piece extruded
silicone gasket with the ends fused to produce a continuous loop,
to eliminate gaps that allow the intrusion of foreign objects into the
optical system.
Standard Arm Mounting: Arm is one piece extruded aluminum
with internal bolt guides. The luminaire to pole attachment is by
draw -bolts, including a pole reinforcing plate with wire strain relief.
Arm will be circular cut to mate with specified round pole.
Reflector Module: Specular Alzak® optical segments are rigidly
mounted within an aluminum enclosure which attaches to the
housing as a one piece module. Reflectors are field rotatable in
900 increments. All sockets are factory prewired with a
quick -disconnect plug for the ballast module. Wire penetrations to
the socket are sealed by a silicone gasket to create a totally sealed
optical chamber. The optical segments are positioned so that
reflected light does not pass through the lamp arc tube. The
horizontal metal halide lamp reflectors are equipped with
pin -oriented mogul base socket with a molded silicone lamp
stabilizer. All vertical reflectors and all HIPS and PMH horizontal
reflectors are equipped with a mogul base socket rated 4KV. All
optical systems are interchangeable within the housing.

The GE Ultra*SportTm floodlight
combines state of the art lamp, optical
and ballast technology packaged together
for the first time in a world class sports
lighting luminaire. The end result is
unmatched light output and efficiency
with excellent visibility and color
rendering for players, spectators and
television broadcasting.
Ultra*Sport floodlights also offer
outstanding beam control virtually
eliminating unwanted glare and spill -
light pollution. Optional features include
Instant Hot Restart and System 2TM' Bi-
Level lighting controls.
The Ultra*Sport floodlight system
significantly reduces the number of
fixtures required to provide the same
required light output and uniformity
ratios. As a result you get: Lower
installation costs; lower structural costs;
lower maintenance costs; and lower
energy consumption. Use the
Ultra*Sport floodlight system in any
application where premium lighting is
required from a high wattage metal
halide light source.
j! When you consider all the features the
Ultra*Sport floodlight has to offer, you
will conclude that the Ultra*Sport
floodlight is light years ahead of the
c I competition.
C
C
Glare/Spill Light Control — The
Ultra*Sport floodlight's precise optical design
limits the amount of vertical spill and light
pollution without the use of external visor/
louver assemblies that increase wind loading
and structural costs. Optional internal cutoff
skirts are available to provide direct cutoff of
the arc tube at 15 degrees above the center
aiming point for optimum glare control with-
out the high losses normally associated with
external glare reducing devices.
Advanced Metal Halide Lamp — The
Ultra*Sport floodlight takes advantage of
metal halide lamp technology, proven by
decades of use in all types of lighting applica-
tions. The Ultra*Sport floodlight uses an
advanced generation of lamps specifically .
designed for use in sports lighting. Offered in a
choice of 2000, 1500 or 1000 watts, these white
light sources feature a double -ended design
without an outer jacket, and provide an aver-
age rated life of 3000, 6000 and 10,000 hours,
respectively. A standard mogul base 1500-watt
metal halide lamp has an average life of 3000
hours. These advanced lamps also provide
excellent color rendering with a 4000 degree
Kelvin color temperature. They are designed
for a horizontal orientation plus or minus 4
degrees, and have no tilt factor.
Hydro*Guard Filtered Optics — The entire
optical is sealed, so that all thermal air transfer
moves through an advanced filtering system
with particle trapping, chemical absorbing,
and moisture controlling properties —critical
for optimum optical performance.
Ballast System — All Ultra*Sport flood-
lights feature a compact GE ballast system in
which the ballast is directly mounted to the
aluminum housing with a thermal wedge for
optimum heat transfer. GE 2000, 1500 and
1000-watt auto -regulator circuits are designed
to start and stabilize their respective double
ended metal halide lamps. Every ballast under-
goes a 2500-volt RMS "High Pot" and a 1 OKv
"Til" test in accordance with ANSI C82.4,
C82.6 and C92.1 specifications. The ballast
circuits are also designed to sustain a nominal
lamp over a line vc,__.ige dip of 50% for up to
four seconds when operating at nominal line
voltage according to ANSI specification C82.6.
The ballast circuit will reliably start and stabi-
lize a nominal lamp in ambient temperatures
down to -20°C. Refer to individual product
descriptions for operating ambient tempera-
tures. Electrical access is achieved from the
rear of the fixture without any adjustment to
the aiming required. The rear housing cover is
held in place by four captive corrosion -resis-
tant cad -polymer coated screws. For safety
reasons, electrical access is not permitted on
fixtures with the hot restart feature and the
rear housing cover is held in place by four
tamper -proof corrosion -resistant cad -polymer
screws.
Instant Hot Restart — Ultra*Sport flood-
lights can be ordered with a new optional
instant hot restart feature. After a momentary
power interruption or line voltage dip which
causes the light to extinguish, the hot restart
pulse will restart the lamp within two seconds
of power reapplication. Unlike other sports
lighting fixtures that offer hot restart, the
Ultra*Sport floodlight does not require any
external add on modules, or transformers that
attach to the standard unit or protrude into
the reflector, to reduce photometric perfor-
mance. All hot restart components mount
inside the standard housing, so both the stan-
dard and hot restart fixtures have the same
external appearance and performance.
System 2 Bi-Level Controls — This option is
offered with 2000-watt and 1500-watt flood-
lights. A 15-volt AC signal (supplied by the
customer) switches the floodlight from high
wattage operation to low wattage operation.
The 2000 watt switches to 1500 watt for low
wattage operation for both 60 Hz and 50 Hz.
The 1500 watt switches to 1000 watt for low
wattage operation at 60 Hz and 900 watt at
50 Hz.
NOTE: Luminaires with the System 2 Bi-
Level controls must be operated at full power
for 15 minutes before switching to low power.
Failure to do this could result in short lamp
life. For more details on System 2 Bi-Level
controls please consult the GE Technical
5
Ultra*Sport Floodlight reatures
Luminaire Construction — The Ultra*Sport
floodlight's optical reflectors and electrical
components are enclosed and protected in
integral, but thermally isolated, heavy-duty
aluminum housings. The floodlight includes a
permanent degree marker on both sides of the
pivot point. A heavy-duty steel trunnion
painted with a zinc rich epoxy powder finish
for corrosion resistance can be mounted on
either the top or bottom of the floodlight.
Main Power Train Housing — The main
housing is made of lightweight noncorrosive
high pressure die-cast aluminum and is inte-
gral to the entire system. The main housing
design isolates the upper optical ring from the
lower electrical compartment for controlled
thermal transfer. The lower compartment
contains all electrical components including
the optional hot restart and System 2 Bi-Level
components, in a compact low -wind -load
design. Unlike other sports lighting fixtures
that offer hot restart, the Ultra*Sport flood-
light does not require any external add -on
modules or transformers that attach to the
standard unit or protrude into the reflector
and reduce photometric performance. All hot
restart components mount inside the standard
housing, so both the standard and hot restart
units have the same external appearance and
performance.
Rear Reflector Housing — The Rear/
Primary reflector is housed in a noncorrosive
high pressure die-cast aluminum cover hinged
to the main housing ring and held shut by four
corrosion -resistant fasteners. High temperature
gaskets completely seal the rear reflector hous-
ing to the main housing.
Front Reflector Housing — The 20-inch
(508mm) Front/Secondary aluminum reflec-
tor is enclosed in a heavy-duty spun aluminum
casing. The front tempered door glass is 1/8-
inch (3.2mm) thick and is permanently sealed
and gasketed to the casing. A high tempera-
ture gasket seals the front optical to the hous-
ing.
Id
Rear Access Relamping and Fixed Aiming
— The Ultra*Sport floodlight's rear reflector
cover serves as an access door to the optical
for relamping and maintenance without any
adjustment to the aiming of the floodlight.
The cover hinges open to 90° for easy access.
For safety, a primary power disconnect circuit
removes power to the lamp when the rear
access door is opened.
Optical Design — A two-piece reflector
configuration features a Rear/Primary
reflector and a Front/Secondary reflector.
The Rear/Primary reflector is made of press
molded glass featuring a highly reflective
dichroic coating for a mirror like finish and
95% visible light reflectivity. The Front/
Secondary reflector is spun from high quality
aluminum and has a GE -patented ALGLAS®
finish. This new lamp/reflector configura-
tion produces a more efficient and effective
oval light distribution with very tight vertical
light control to minimize wasted light and to
maximize light on the playing field.
Photometric Performance — Traditional
sports lighting systems use metal halide
lamps with large bulb jackets and mogul base
sockets located in the axial center -line of the
optical. This lamp design impedes optical
efficiency by producing inefficient symmetri-
cal light distributions with too much light in
the upper beam. Some upper beam light is
lost in the sky and grandstands or, in the
worst case, can be the source of light trespass
and glare. The Ultra*Sport floodlight, on
the other hand, utilizes an advanced double -
ended metal halide lamp without a bulb
jacket and a new reflector design. The elimi-
nation of the outer bulb jacket allows place-
ment of the lamp arc into the focal point of
the shallow parabolic reflector forms needed
to build high center beam candlepower
which provides the highest beam efficiency
possible with wide beam distributions. This
new lamp/reflector configuration produces a
more efficient, oval light distribution with
very tight vertical light control to minimize
wasted light and maximize light on the
playing field.

lamp, optical and ballast technology from
various lighting applications packaged
together for the first time in a state of the art
sports lighting design. The end result is
unmatched light output and efficiency with
excellent visibility and color rendering for
players, spectators and television broadcasting.
Ultra*Sport floodlights also offer outstand-
ing control of unwanted glare and spill -light
pollution and include affordable optional
features like Instant Hot Restart and System 2TM
Bi-Level lighting controls. When you look at all
the features the Ultra*Sport floodlight has to
offer, you will agree the Ultra*Sport floodlight
is light years ahead of the competition.
The Ultra*Sport floodlight system signifi-
cantly reduces the number of fixtures required
to provide the same required light output and
uniformity ratios. As a result you get:
• Lower installation costs
• Lower structural costs
• Lower maintenance costs
• Less energy consumption
Suggested applications for the Ultra*Sport
floodlight system include:
IESNA Class III to major stadia where
premium quality lighting and excellent
glare control are required.
• Medium to large indoor arenas.
• Large stadia and arenas where television
recording and broadcasting will be com-
mon, and excellent color rendering and
high vertical plane illumination are
required.
• Sports fields and arenas where optional
Instant Hot Restart is desired in case of
momentary power interruption or large
line dips. This feature can be critical when
television recording and broadcasting is
taking place and revenues may be at risk if
there is a short -duration power loss that
could cause an 8 to 12-minute fixture
blackout.
• Facilities requiring instant off/on capabil-
ity for dramatic theatrical lighting.
• Other general floodlighting applications
where premium lighting is required from
a high -wattage metal halide light source.

Broken Glass Shutdown Circuit — Metal
halide light sources produce ultraviolet (UV)
radiation. If a person is directly exposed, this
radiation can cause discomfort and sometimes
permanent eye damage. Normally UV radia-
tion is absorbed in the lamp' s outer jacket.
Unjacketed lamps rely on a luminaire's optical
lens to absorb the UV. If the lens of a fixture
that uses an unjacketed lamp is broken, the
escaping ultraviolet radiation can create a
potential health risk to players and spectators.
The Ultra*Sport floodlight is the first sports
lighting fixture to feature a Broken Glass
Shutdown Circuit to eliminate this risk. The
system continuously senses the integrity of the
front door lens. In the unlikely event that the
lens is broken, the system automatically shuts
off the power to the lamp. A Broken Glass
Shutdown Circuit is a standard feature on all
Ultra*Sport floodlights.
Ultra*Sport Floodlight Structural Data
Mounting — The standard Ultra*Sport
floodlight comes with a heavy-duty steel
mounting trunnion finished with a zinc -rich
epoxy powder paint for superior corrosion
resistance. The trunnion can be either top or
bottom mounted, is precision balanced for
accurate aiming and is capable of withstanding
wind forces equal to 125 mph with a 1.3 gust
factor without misalignment of the floodlight.
Finish— The standard Ultra*Sport flood-
light comes with an electrostatically applied
TGIC charcoal gray polyester powder paint
finish to the housing of the floodlight. This
process consists of two separate paint coatings.
The first coat is a modified acrylic applied by
the electrocoat process to a thickness of
approximately one mil. This coat acts as a
primer and covers all surfaces inside and
outside of the castings. The second coat is the
TGIC polyester powder coat which is electro-
statically applied to a minimum thickness of
approximately 1.5 mils. Both coats are thermo-
set coatings which, by definition, means that
when cured with heat, they will cross-link and
result in a heat -resistant and chemically -resis-
tant finish that will not melt when reexposed to
expected operating temperatures. Polyester
powder finishes are known for their tenacity in
bonding to all kinds of surfaces as well as their
resistance to chemical and physical abuse.
Contact factory for other possible decorator
colors.
Aiming — To aim, simply align the aiming
sight located on the rear optical door with the
aiming indicator on the edge of the optical
and the target. Once these three points are
aligned, tighten the trunnion bolts. Because all
access to maintain the Ultra*Sport floodlight
is from the rear, the aiming never needs to be
disturbed to relamp or perform ballast mainte-
nance.
Wind Loading/EPA — The maximum
effective projected area (EPA) per floodlight is
3.1 sq. ft. (0.29 sq. M).
Vibration — The Ultra*Sport floodlight has
passed a Sustained Vibration Endurance Test
and a High Loading Vibration Test. The tests
were conducted in accordance with GE stan-
dard No. 06.326.001. The endurance portion
of the test is to simulate an infinite number of
cycles at a force of 1 g. The high loading
vibration test is a 4 g, 5000 cycle test to address
shock loads and other miscellaneous forces
that occur during handling, shipping and in
service.
Classification — The Ultra*Sport floodlight
has been given an Ingress Protection rating of
IP55.
