to have saved the canopy, how well was this really going to look
hanging over the top of the addition?
This certainly is a difficult design problem, but worthy of
solving because the building is so significant to the
transportation history of our city and of the state. This was
the largest C & S Depot from Denver to the Montana border, and
the only free standing Railway Express Agency north of Denver.

you for your presentation and continuing patience to find a

Facilities Services
Dear Mr. Gianola:
As you know, last evening the Landmark Preservation Commission
heard a second conceptual review of the transit center plans for
the old C&S Depot at 136 Laporte. I will try to summarize the
Commission's various comments:
SITE IMPROVEMENTS
Bike Locker - two LPC voiced concern about the mausoleum look of
the bike lockers.
Kiss n'Ride - all generally liked the plans for this area but
there was some concern that the columns would be too heavy and
tall.
Trash Enclosure - only one LPC member actually commented on the
trash enclosure, and that person liked the design as drawn. I
understand that there are City requirements so you will have to
resolve that issue with Mr. Stratis. His concern was a point of
historic preservation that the enclosure not be made to look like
it was historic, but rather it should disappear.
HISTORIC BUILDING CHANGES
Bay window - Like Mr. Stratis, the LPC saw this bracketed bay as
not appropriate. One LPC suggested it must be a new piece and
not appear as a passenger depot. Another member suggested a box
bay.
Dock - They were all genuinely pleased to see the dock saved and
welcome the opportunity to designate the entire dock.
NEW ADDITION CONCERNS
There was some consensus that you need to look at relocating the
addition because the City needs this to be a model project. Most
LPC understand this conflicts with the need to house the bike
function and mechanicals. Given that, a few were resigned to the
building, and suggested the design was too heavy (like a 1960s
gym or Fort Knox) or needed to be "lightened up." Suggestions
varied from dropping the building, lightening the doors with
glass, turn the windows vertically, and more visual disconnection
between the new and old buildings. Although a couple of LPC
thought the design was okay and one other person commented that
you "shouldn't fuss too much changing it or making it more than
what it is," the consensus was that it needed a lighter, better
design.
There was concern mentioned by two LPC that although it was great
