Explanation of Tree Removal
Dear Steve:

At the request of Tim Buchanan, City Forester, this letter is an explanation of the need
for the removal of the existing trees and the mitigation requirements agreed upon.
There are currently eight (8) existing shade trees, three (3) ornamental trees, and no
evergreen trees on this property. As proposed the Richie's Express Carwash PDP has
saved and protected the 3 ornamental trees and 3 shade trees. We have proposed to
remove 5 existing shade trees. There are 3 Summit Ash trees and 2 Honey Locust
street trees to be removed.
We have tried to save as many trees as possible, but do to the site constraints we have
had to propose the removal and mitigation of 5 shade trees. Two of the Summit Ash
trees will be in the location of the proposed building. The building was considering the
safe vehicular pedestrian patterns for this proposed carwash. One of the other Summit
Ash trees is in the area that is needed for the water quality/storm detention area and the
grade will need to be lowered approximately 18-inches. This tree will be removed, site
graded and then replaced with a 3-inch mitigation tree. The mitigation of these three
removed Summit Ash trees will be upsizing 7 proposed shade trees to 3-inch caliper
size.
There are two Honey Locust street trees that will need to be removed for ingress and
egress. We have tried to make the existing access work, but with the proposed traffic
patterns it has not been possible. Also, the existing access onto Foothills Parkway is in
a location that has potential left turn conflicts with the existing access across the street
into Alfalfa's. They are not lined up with each other. Working with the City Engineering
Staff, we have agreed upon the proposed location for the Richie's Express Carwash
ingress and egress from Foothills Parkway. These two removed Honey Locust street
trees will be mitigated by upsizing 5 shade trees to 3-inch caliper size.
