Subject: REFERENCE TO HARMONY STORE
From: Judy Sandoval
TO WHOM THIS MAY CONCERN:
I READ THE ARTICLE IN THE COLORADOAN NEWSPAPER THAT THE HARMONY
STORE WILL BE DEMOLISHED IF THE ZONING GOES THROUGH ALLOWING
A BANK TO BE PUT ON THE CORNER OF TIMBERLINE AND HARMONY, WHICH
IS WHERE THE HARMONY STORE RESIDED.
I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN. THERE ARE SO FEW
HISTORICAL SITES IN OUR AREA, AND I BELEIVE THIS IS ONE SHOULD
BE PRESERVED. I DO KNOW THAT THERE ARE TWO OTHER LOCATIONS THAT
HAVE BEEN DECLARED AS HISTORICAL SITES, THE PRESTON HOUSE AND THE
HARMONY HOUSE. I BELEIVE THAT THE HARMONY STORE HAS AS MUCH IF NOT
MORE HISTORY TO BE SHARED AS THE TWO MENTIONED.
1 AM THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF MR.& MRS ROY MCELRAVY, WHOM OWNED AND
OPERATED THE HARMONY STORE AND GARAGE FROM 1940 TO 1982.
THE HARMONY STORE AND GARAGE SUPPORTED THE HARMONY COMMUNITY
FOR MANY YEARS. ROY MCELRAVY WAS THE SOUL PERSON THAT DID THE UPKEEP
AND REPAIRS FOR MOST OF THE FARMERS IN THE HARMONY COMMUNITY.
HELEN MCELRAVY WAS THE STORE KEEPER OF THE HARMONY STORE, WHERE
SHE LEARNED TO SPEAK SPANISH ON HER OWN SO SHE COULD COMMUNICATE
WITH MIGRANT WORKERS THAT CAME INTO THE AREA TO WORK THE FIELDS.
THE HARMONY STORE WAS THE KING SOOPERS OF THE 40'S. THE HISTORY OF
THIS LITTLE STORE COULD HELP OUR CHILDREN TODAY UNDERSTAND WHAT
LIFE WAS LIKE IN THE 1940'S.
I BELEIVE THAT THERE IS A LOT OF HISTORY THAT THE TOWN OF FORT COLLINS
DOES NOT HAVE DOCUMENTED ON THE HARMONY STORE AND GARAGE.
I BELIEVE THE STORE SHOULD BE DECLARED A HISTORICAL SITE, THE STORE SHOULD
BE MOVED BACK TO THE CORNER OF HARMONY AND TIMBERLINE WHERE IS HAS
SAT AND BEEN A LANDMARK FOR MANY YEARS. THE TOWN OF FORT COLLINS SHOULD
SIT WITH THE TWO DAUGHTERS AND GRANDCHILDREN OF MR.& MRS ROY MCELRAVY,
AND OBTAIN THE HISTORY FOR THE YEARS THEIR PARENTS OWNED AND OPERATED
THE STORE AND GARAGE.
WHY DESTROY ALL OF OUR HISTORY IN ORDER TO SUPPORT A BUSINESS THAT COULD
BE BUILT ANYWHERE?
IN THE CASE THAT THE TOWN OF FORT COLLINS DOES NOT BELEIVE THIS HISTORY
IS BENIFICAL FOR THE CHILDREN OF TOMORROW, WOULD THE GRANDCHILDREN
OF MR. & MRS MCELRAVY BE ABLE TO MOVE THE STORE TO THEIR PROPERTY
AND PRESEVE IT THERE? I AM VERY INTERESTED IN OBTAINING THE STORE IF
IT IS TO BE DESTROYED.
THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TO MY CONCERNS.
