The request to build a three-story structure in our neighborhood should be denied because it will significantly invade our privacy. As our lot borders the south side of the proposed project, we believe we shall have significant privacy degradation due to the height, position and orientation of the south -most proposed structure. The proposed structures will also change the character of the neighborhood, as there are few 3-story buildings. We believe that the predominantly one and two story buildings that dominate the landscape provide a logical context from which subsequent structures should be modeled. Departure from this sense of consistency will have a lasting impact that will only harm the neighborhood's historic fabric. We also oppose the request to decrease the legal amount of setback on the south side of the development because it will present a shabby, "shoehorned" facade from Wood St. as well as from the north side of our lot, with too little space between structures and neighborhood features. My wife and I moved to this neighborhood precisely because of the ample space between buildings. If we wanted to live in an area where people's windows looked down upon their neighbor's back yards, we would have chosen elsewhere to live. The development will encroach on a public right-of-way that is used by others and ourselves. This fact has already been demonstrated when the city, because of our protest, denied the developer's request to vacate and take over the alley for their project. Asking for seven feet less of a setback than is required by law is not minor and inconsequential. Nine inches is minor and inconsequential, seven feet is not. Thank you for taking the time to address our concerns, Royce Simpson and Lisa Peterson 217-5808 818 Maple St. CC: "Royce & Lisa" <roycenlisa@comcast.net>
