Dear Ms. Aspen,
As concerns the "Wood Street Lofts" development proposal for the 300 block of Wood Street, we stand
opposed to the proposal as presented to our neighborhood in a meeting held at the City Utilities office in
May 2004.
While we are not opposed to property improvements, we are opposed to projects that we believe will
change the nature and character of our neighborhood so drastically. Improvements should fit into the
physical and economic scale of the existing neighborhood.
We specifically oppose passing of the request for two variances. Housing needs to remain no more than
two stories high to fit to scale. The current proposed buildings dwarf all existing housing west of Howes
Street and north of Mountain Avenue, and thus violate the city plan for this area of Old Town in which
buildings decrease in height west of Howes Street. Secondly, any new structures need to be set back from
the alley according to current codes to respect public property.
We strongly believe the city has a responsibility to protect the heritage and character of this Old Town
neighborhood from developers whose scale of project suggests a profit motive rather than fitting into the
character of the neighborhood. Like the overwhelming majority of neighbors attending the May meeting,
we strongly reject this "paradigm change" proposed by the developers.
Sincerely,
Don Inglis-Widrick
