In particular, we request a variance to reduce the 835-foot corner intersection sight distance for a design speed of 45 MPH required by Larimer County Urban Area Street Standards (LCUASS) Figure 7-16, dated 9/11/00. We are requesting a 500-foot intersection sight distance turning left and 430-foot intersection sight distance turning right onto West Harmony Road. Our justification for the decrease in the intersection sight distance is based upon the fact that the Larimer County Urban Area Street Standard (LCUASS) Figure 7-16 is from "A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets 1990" by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and the requested values have been updated from "A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets 2001" by AASHTO. In addition, pursuant to conversations with the city traffic engineer, utilizing this updated criterion is appropriate based on the proximity to the intersection and the nature of the roadway. Therefore it is concluded that a variance to allow a 500-foot intersection sight distance turning left and 430-foot intersection sight distance turning right onto West Harmony Road will not compromise the health, welfare, and safety of the public.
