However, your outdoor storage has to be screened. Therefore, based on the Land Use Code, chain -link fencing cannot be used as a fencing material for screening purposes. Section 3.5.1(I)(2) of the Land Use Code states that outdoor storage shall be incorporated into the overall design theme of the building and landscape so that the architectural design is continuous and uninterrupted and no attention is attracted to the function by use of screening materials that are different from or inferior to the principal materials of the building and landscape. Storage areas shall be located and screened so that the visual and acoustic impacts of this function are fully contained and out of view from adjacent properties and public streets. Peter Barnes and I have discussed this issue and have come to the following conclusion: You can use chain -link fence on certains sides of the proposed exterior fenced storage areas; however, you must use a material (probably cedar or lapboard siding like on the building) on the sides of the storage areas that are visible to the adjacent properties and streets, as follows: - Storage area at northwest corner of site - wood on the west and north sides, chain -link on the east and south sides. - Storage area just to the east of the trash enclosure - wood on the north side, chain -link on the other 3 sides. - Storage area just to the west of the northwest corner of the building - wood on the west and south sides, chain -link on the north and east sides. Hopefully this gives you sufficient direction on the outdoor storage fencing issue. Steve >>> "Heather Butler" <Heather@architecturewestllc.com> 12/28/2006 10:46 AM >>> Hi Steve, I wanted to clarify something in the Land Use Code. We would like to use chain -link fencing around the exterior storage. Using this material secures its contents as well as allows everyone to view what's going on inside - for safety/security reasons. 3.8.11 B states that chain -link cannot be used as a fencing material for screening purposes. Screening is not our purpose, but I know that chain -link is usually discouraged. Can you think of any reason why we couldn't use chain -link for the exterior storage areas? Thanks Heather
