This entry needs to allow for pedestrians passing in both directions plus coming into and out of the building. In the past when we have worked in the downtown area designing architectural elements that encroach into the public row such as steps, walls, railings, pots, etc... the rule of thumb was to provide at least 7' of unobstructed walk for the pedestrian to pass. We believe having 9' in an area with a relatively low pedestrian volume is sufficient. The bike rack shown was intended to be one like has been used in other downtown locations where bikes are parked parallel to the pipe railing. On giving it more thought, we agree that the bicycle parking should probably move to another location. We will follow up with a proposed alternative for bike parking. Thanks for the feedback. In talking with some, for our own information, we're wondering what's driving the design aspect to have the wider walkway in front of the main entry such that 9' is maintained instead of the 12713'? This present configuration combined with the proximity and alignment of the detached sidewalk section and the bike rack location (which likely has some LUC concerns regarding clearance and impeding of pedestrian flow [3.2.2(C)(4)(b)&(c)]) has raised some concerns. Sheri will be coordinating further discussion internally with myself being out next week, though I'll look to keep track of the discussion online.
