Shepard -Fire Station Proposal
3) The west part of the site could become a part of and an enhancement to the
Spring Creek Trail (which can be thought of as a linear community park) with
the addition of parking and an access point to the Trail. The house could be
used as a headquarters for Spring Creek Trail personnel, a community center
and bicycling facility.
4) Use the opportunity to develop a bicycling center to strengthen the use of
bicycles as an alternative form of transportation
5) Restore and put to suitable reuse the barn on the site as a way of
preserving the historic character of the area. Add historic interpretive
signage to provide trail users with a sense of the agricultural heritage of
this location
-It should be understood that the above ideas would involve engagement and
commitment of resources by the City. There is no expectation that PFA should
be solely responsible for implementing these amenities. Our Steering Committee
agrees that there is great value in having a fire station at this location. We
would like this proposal to open a discussion in the City for consideration of
these amenities.
-Our City Council representative, Kelly Ohlson, has an interest in many of the
ideas above due to his longstanding involvement in open space and natural area
use in Fort Collins. Feel free to contact him with your thoughts on this
proposal
Put April 28 on your calendar and please attend and share your ideas. This
site is important to our neighborhood and the meeting will be a chance to make
our opinions known.
Regards,
RWMNN Steering Committee

Fire Station Proposal
Ted,
Thanks for the alert and information on the PFA Fire Station Proposal. Our
Steering Committee has been discussing the proposal these past few days,
drafted the statement below and sent it to our neighborhood email list. This
is just brainstorming among us, to get some ideas out for our neighborhood
residents to think about and encourage them to come to the meeting. I wanted
you to have this so you know what we are thinking at this time. If you need
to contact our neighborhood group in the next few weeks, contact Melisse
Anderson at 482-5658 or goglobal@frii.com
Again thanks for your assistance on this issue.
Regards,
Lloyd
Neighbors,
The Poudre Fire Authority (PFA) is proposing to buy the approximately 10 acre
parcel on the SE corner of Drake and Taft and build a new fire station on the
eastern half of the site. This is to better serve this area as the fire
station on Devonshire further on Taft has become too small. We understand that
PFA has no immediate plans for the west half of the parcel, the part at the
intersection with a house on it. A neighborhood meeting is planned for this
proposal, scheduled for April 28 at 7pm at the Unitarian Church, 1815
Yorktown. Please attend and share your thoughts and ideas about this proposal.
In particular, give some thought to how the entire site might be developed
with this proposal.
The RMWNN Steering Committee has discussed the proposal and offers the
following thoughts and observations:
-This would be a great enhancement to our neighborhood and southwest Fort
Collins. Not only would we be better served by emergency services but the site
will be put to a very passive use.
-Siren noise may be a concern of the neighborhood. There should be an
explanation given by PFA about their policy of use of sirens as they exit the
station in an emergency. (Our understanding is that they do not use sirens at
such time. We just seek confirmation on this point).
-The City should consider entering into a partnership with PFA for development
of that portion of the site not dedicated to fire station use. City agencies
and stakeholders including Parks, Natural Areas, Stormwater, Historic
Preservation, and the Bicycle Coalition have goals which could be met by such
partnering. Opportunities for such partnering might include:
1) Portions of the site should be considered to be added to the Spring Creek
Trail that borders the south of the parcel. Improvements to the Trail as part
of the development of the site could include removing the fencing presently
there, landscaping the trail with trees and shrubs, enhancing the
riparian/wetland function of Spring Creek as it crosses the southeast corner
of the site, creating a rest stop with a picnic table and restrooms.
2) Demonstrate innovative techniques for managing stormwater produced on the
site
