Please see the photo of the existing bike rack below. If a bicycle straddles this parking structure, it can be parked in such a way that both wheels can be locked to the structure. This bike rack is permanent construction. The term "such as" indicates that tubular steel is an example of something that is permanent construction. I contend that steel bars are also permanent. It's size is approximately 2 feet by 5.5 feet in size. There's at least 5 feet of maneuvering space on either side. Would you consider this to satisfy the bike rack design requirement? Please let me know if I need to upgrade to a new bike rack to satisfy this requirement in your view. We would like to go to mylar, so could you please let me know if you agree with my justification below? Troy From: Troy Jones fmailto:troyCa)architex.coml Sent: Thursday, August 23, 2012 10:00 PM To: 'Courtney Levingston' Subject: bicycle rack - Little Bears Child Care Courtney, The standard that applies to bike racks in the LUC is 3.2.2(C)(4)(c)which states "Design. Bicycle parking facilities shall be designed to allow the bicycle frame and both wheels to be securely locked to the parking structure. The structure shall be of permanent construction such as heavy gauge tubular steel with angle bars permanently attached to the pavement foundation. We'll upgrade the bike rack accordingly. Other than the bike rack, I think we are pretty close to going to mylar. I will follow up with you on the bike rack we propose to verify that it meets standards in your view before we go to mylar. In the mean time, I'll follow up with an item by item email response to the few remaining comments. It looks like we are down to simple cosmetic tweaks to the drawings. This design is the old fashioned "wheelbender" rack and is unsuitable for use with a U- shaped lock and is not conducive to securing both wheels to. Many cyclists will not use a rack that only holds the wheel or is unsuitable for a u-lock. I have cc'ed Molly North, bicycle coordinator, as well as Aaron Iverson, Senior Transportation Planner to provide insight/input on this Land Use Code standard. Additionally, I have attached the bicycle rack design guidelines. Please do not go to mylar since this issue is yet to be resolved.
