Dear Mr. Olt;
We received your informational letter concerning the Shenandoah Retail Center
on South College Avenue. Unfortunately, we will be out of town during that time.
However, I would like to voice my concerns about this proposal.
We are very much against it, to begin with. I cannot imagine that we need another supermarket
so near to the Harmony Stores, both Safeway and Kings. I am sure that Kings has done their
research and feel this would be a good move for them, but it certainly would not be a good move
for this area. Carpenter road is already getting extremely busy, and the load of trucks going back
and forth on it would greatly increase with this development. Already I see triple — load semi
trucks going down that road from UPS frequently. is King Soopers willing to widen and
improve the road all the way to I-25? Their trucks are certainly going to use Carpenter road to .
come and go since it is the most convenient way.
My greatest concern, however, is not the road but the increasing loss of open space between
Loveland and Fort Collins. Does Fort Collins really want to become another Denver, with city
after city just abutted next to each other with no open space? That area is full of wildlife. We
often.see hawks'and even eagles soaring over our property. Coyotes can be heard at night.
Whatever happened to all the concern about the prairie dogs? The city was so adamant about
protecting them a few years ago, and now the fields are being plowed up. Prairie dogs were
chased into our yard and started digging new holes just recently because of development just east
of us. While I am not a huge fan of prairie dogs, it still seems so hypocritical of the city to
change policies so quickly concerning this issue. And, the prairie dogs feed the eagles, fox,
skunks, and coyotes that we still see and hear around here fairly frequently.
The incredible traffic impact another shopping center would have on a road that is not equipped
to handle it, along with the loss of open space that would be gone forever, are too high a price to
pay for a huge corporate giant to gain more money. This somewhat country feeling
neighborhood would quickly loose that advantage and become just another part of the city.
Please do not let this happen! It makes no sense for a huge shopping center to be right across the
street from horse properties.
I would like to receive the notes from the meeting.
Thank You,
Connie Reilly
