HomeMy WebLinkAboutTHE GROVE AT FORT COLLINS - FDP - FDP110015 - CORRESPONDENCE - (34)Pot usually but sometimes we do. We amended soils at RBP before we seeded and have done
soil samples out at PDM, KFP and FCW to get an idea of what was going on out there before
we seeded. I think that a topsoil or manure is fine, but no chemical fertilizers. Oh and
the soil lab will almost always tell you that you will need to amend your soils because
they are more agricultural based. Natives can live in some harsh soils as you know, so I
don't usually recommend amendments and samples.

Subject: Soil Amendment Question
Matt, Crystal, or Ryan:
I believe we do not typically do soil amendments when we seed in native grasses/forbs, or
plant native shrubs --if we have top soil. This came up with review of a development along
Spring Creek south of the Gardens on Spring Creek. Do you even typically run soil tests
to see if amendments are needed? Probably for Kingfisher Point you would, but normally do
you?
Thanks for your help.

The lab will probably say to amend, but that might not be what you want to do since the
lab is ag oriented and we are growing native plants here and not crops that need the
nutrients. You could require that the soil test be done and have them go off the
recommendation of the NAP staff (i.e., Crystal) to make sure that they aren't adding any
nutrients that would be harmful. What grows crops and bluegrass well can harm native
plants. I would imagine that site is pretty fertile as it is and not require amendments,
but I think it's a reasonable approach to require a soil test and obtain the
recommendation of NAP staff for need to amend the soil.

So what do you think, given all of this? I still haven't
heard back from Ted or Steve
regarding whether we can even allow this given our Land
Use and Municipal Code
requirements. But, I would think that, at a minimum, we
should require the preservation of
the topsoil and perhaps soil testing to assess whether
or not they need to have the soil
amended? We could also stipulate that we only amend the
soil with organic compost (manure,
etc.)...

I'm pretty open on this one, I think it's a great direction
to head, just wanting to make
sure we get to best.
Thanks for the follow up Karen!
