Re: 220 East Olive Street: Addition of a Permitted Use for a Micro-Brewery/Winery/
Distillery and Project Development Plan
Dear Ted,
Three members of the DMA Plaza board of directors attended the November 29, 2011
neighborhood information meeting at Mountain View Community Church in regards to
the possibility of utilizing 220 East Olive Street as a site for a micro -brewery. At that
time, we expressed our concerns with this project at that location, but now we want to
formally go on record as a Board of Directors for the DMA Plaza (a senior, low-income
project with 120 apartments across the street from this project), in opposition to the use of
220 East Olive as a site for a micro -brewery, distillery, or winery.
We feel this project is not compatible with the predominantly residential neighborhood,
which DMA Plaza borders. Coopersmiths, Pateros Creek and Equinox breweries are
in commercial zones near other restaurants. All of the other operations are in industrial
zones. This location at 220 East Olive Street would be unprecedented and a bad
precedent in that it would bring significant commercial and entertainment activity to
this predominantly residential area.
We can understand the landlord's dilemma with a vacant building that would be an ideal
site for condominiums which are apparently not feasible in this current economic climate.
However, a bad economy is no excuse for a poor zoning decision (i.e. allowing light
industrial in a neighborhood conservation buffer zone). We as a board would urge you to
deny this request to permit a micro -brewery at 220 East Olive Street.
Sincerely,
Carett President
DMA Plaza Board of Directors
