Collins - 1002 Rule Drive - Tree Mitigation Plan Ralph, Per our conversation this morning, I have attached a copy of the latest revised tree mitigation plan that was submitted to the City's FTP site last Friday. As requested by Tim Buchanan I tried to Reach Dave at Jordan's Trees yesterday to coordinate an on -site meeting with you to discuss the tree spade size needed for the proposed transplants. I was able to speak with Dustin, who indicated that he would be contacting you to coordinate such a meeting. Please give me a call with any questions, and let me know when such a meeting is to be scheduled. Thanks, Kirby Kirby Smith, PLA, ASLA Kirby Smith & Associates, Inc. Collins - 1002 Rule Drive - Tree Mitigation Plan Kirby — I met with David Jordan and Dustin Coy today on -site. David will send you a short report about transplanting. For Courtney and Kirby — Tim asked for me to review the watering schedule for the trees for the establishment period and to look at the transplant specs. Following are changes I believe should be made: 1. Supplemental watering should occur for the establishment period of the transplanted trees. For trees this size it is recommended to plan for supplemental watering for at least the first 2 growing seasons. The rate should be 100 gallons per week starting in April and going through the end of September, then 100 gallons every 4 weeks October through March. The need will vary based on precipitation and temperatures, but these guidelines should be fairly accurate. Since there is good irrigation occurring on this site, 2 years may be adequate for the extra water but the trees should be monitored for the next 2 to 3 years after that. 2. For the transplant spec please make the following changes: Replace the staking spec with something like " 6ft heavy duty metal "T" Posts driven straight into the soil outside the rootball of each tree" Use "2 Strand Twisted 12 gauge Galvanized Wire attached.to a 2 inch wide Nylon Webbing or Tree Strap, or Approved Equivalent" Omit "Turnbuckle", Omit "Specified Backfill" section completely Change "OPORATION" to "OPERATION" in the do not prune section Add a spec that says something like "Fill all air pockets around rootball with soil after initial tree spade size to use. Please have the assistant City Forester Ralph Zentz (221- 6302) attend this meeting. Once tree spade size is determined by the qualified tree transplanting contractor the column for tree spade size can be completed. 6. Also review the proposed transplant tree irrigation plan and tree transplanting detail with the qualified tree transplanting contractor at the on -site meeting and edit as necessary if this has not already been done. 7. On sheet L-3/tree mitigation plan add in parentheses after the heading Tree Protections Notes (applies to all trees marked (P) to remain and be protected). 8. For the tree planting details on L-2 remove the statement — paint all cuts over V diameter. 9. This is the current industry standard for wire basket removal that could be used for the tree planting details. Cut and remove the top 1 /3 to 1/2 of the wire basket and burlap, and all the twine from before finishing backfilling. 10. Utility tree separations are 10 feet for water and sewer mains and 6 feet for water and sewer services. Please change plant note #2 to reflect this. 11. Tree number 42 was recently identified as being impacted. It may be to be transplanted on the most current plans from discussion with the LA. Be sure the current status of this tree is reflected on the plans. Comments Sterling House 7-19-12 1. Tree number count: I think it would make it clearer to have just one line called trees to remain on site which is 84 for current and proposed. After the 84 in the proposed site column then in parenthesis say (40 required to receive tree protection during construction and 44 are away from construction zones and do not require specified protection). This should show how the 84 on the proposed are distributed between protected and not being fenced or protected. Please review actual counts. In my review, and I may have miss -counted, but did come up with the following totals: 40 trees marked with P as exiting and protected. This would leave 44 as existing and not requiring protection with fencing or other means. 37 new trees Reconcile any slight differences in number trees to be transplanted on the different sheets by using the actual number in the tree mitigation table. Tree number 17 is marked to transplant on the mitigation plan but is identified for removal in the Tree mitigation table. 2. Please mark two existing trees just east of the parking lot to remain with a P to receive tree protection. 3. Add this plant note: The soil in all landscape areas, including parkways and medians, shall be thoroughly loosened to a depth of not less than eight (8) inches and soil amendment shall be thoroughly incorporated into the soil of all landscape areas to a depth of at least six (6) inches by tilling, discing or other suitable method, at a rate of at least three (3) cubic yards of soil amendment per one thousand (1,000) square feet of landscape area. 4. Add these notes to the Tree Mitigation Plan L-3. All tree removal shall be performed by a City of Fort Collins Licensed Arborist where required by code. If any construction activity appears that it will impact any existing not identified for protection. contact the City Forester to determine what tree protection will be required. 5. The On -site meeting may still need to occur with a qualified tree transplanting contractor to determine feasibility of transplanting trees and the recommended
