Engineering Development Review Manager City of Fort Collins PO Box 580 Fort Collins, CO 80522-0580 From: Jade P. Miller, P.E. DMW Civil Engineers, Inc. Date: January 30, 2008 Project: Liberty Farms, Fort Collins, Colorado Project No. 0710.00-1-I13 On behalf of our client with the above referenced project, we are requesting a variance to the City's Standard Design Criteria. Per the Larimer County Urban Area Street Standards (LCUASS), Sec. 8.2.8.13, and Appendix I, Sec. 1.1.1, modem roundabouts shall be designed to accommodate WB-67 trucks. The proposed roundabout accommodates a WB-67 truck turning southbound to westbound, and turning eastbound to northbound. All other turns accommodate a WB-50 truck. The substandard roundabout design for this project is predicated on several factors. First, the west and north legs of the roundabout are minor arterial roads while the east and south legs are local connectors. Per LCUASS Sec. 8.2.8.0 a WB-50 truck is the design vehicle for an Arterial/Connector intersection. This roundabout accommodates a WB-50 truck for all Arterial -Connector and Connector -Connector turns. The roundabout also accommodates a WB-67 for the two Arterial -Arterial turns. Second, the geometry is restrictedbased upon site characteristics and the City's Master Street Plan. Third, this roundabout design was discussed and approved at the January 24, 2008 Transportation Coordination meeting. In conclusion, full compliance with the Standard Design Criteria would impose undue hardship in developing the site. It is our opinion that the proposed design will adequately meet the intent of the standards for the health, safety and welfare of the public.
