HomeMy WebLinkAbout1984-050-03/20/1984-CONCERNING A NUCLEAR WEAPONS MORATORIUM BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND THE SOVIET UNION, NOT CONSIDER RESOLUTION 84- 50 J/ OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS 1 CONCERNING A NUCLEAR WEAPONS MORATORIUM BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND THE SOVIET UNION r WHEREAS, the nuclear arms race threatens the prosperity and security of Fort Collins and the United States: -by draining scarce scientific, material and financial resources needed for private and public investment, ;and the creation of jobs, -by encouraging the spread of nuclear weaponry throughout the world, -by posing a grave and increasing .threat of global nuclear war, and -by inflicting psychological harm resulting from the threat to the future of ourselves and our chilen. p NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVFO BY THE CITIZENS OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS, COLORADO, AS FOLLOWS: i Section 1 . That we call ;`upon the Congress of the United States to suspend funds for the testing/of nuclear warheads and for the testing and deployment of ballistic missiles, provided the Soviet Union simultaneously halts the same activities. , hese activities are currently being monitored with high confidence by both the United States and the Soviet Union. Section 2. That w call upon the President of the United States to propose to the Soviet U ion a bilateral , verifiable freeze on the testing, production and deploy ent of all nuclear warheads and delivery systems, utilizing on-site ins ection as needed. Section 3. T at, immediately following the signing and ratification of a comprehensive bilateral nuclear weapons freeze agreement, we call upon the President of, the United States to propose to the Soviet Union deep reductions in t nuclear arsenals of both countries. Section That we call upon the President of the United States to do all in his ower to prevent the acquisition by non-nuclear nations of technology d materials needed to produce nuclear weapons, and to propose a multilat al nuclear weapons freeze to all nations producing such weapons. Sec ion 5. That we call upon the Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, Colorad to expeditiously inform our federal congressional delegation and the P sident of the United States of the adoption of this measure, and prov' a the aforementioned officials with a complete text of the resolution.
