OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS
EXPRESSING ITS SUPPORT FOR THE CITY'S INVOLVEMENT
IN A REGIONAL COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS AND DEVELOP OPTIONS TO
ADDRESS THE ISSUE OF FUTURE WATER SUPPLIES FOR NORTHERN COLORADO;
AND APPOINTING THREE CITY REPRESENTATIVES TO THE COMMITTEE
WHEREAS,historically,the foundation of northern Colorado's vibrant economy has been
the availability of adequate water resources; and
WHEREAS,northern Colorado has enjoyed an abundant supply of high quality water, due
to the efforts of various individuals and organizations committed to sound planning and development
of the area's water resources; and
WHEREAS,the citizens of Fort Collins enjoy a unique and quality environment, due to the
availability of adequate water resources for both agricultural and urban uses; and
WHEREAS, the need for additional water supplies in the Denver metropolitan area has
proven to be a threat to the future availability of water supply in Northern Colorado to meet the
needs of both agricultural and urban uses; and
WHEREAS,citizens and government officials in Northern Colorado have expressed concern
about the urgent need to plan for the future of the area to ensure there will be adequate water supplies
to meet existing and future water needs; and
WHEREAS,the City Council,the Water Utilities Board,and City staff are concerned about
planning for future water supplies and have expressed interest in working with other government
officials, representatives from agriculture, representatives from environmental groups, and other
interested citizens to discuss and develop options to ensure the availability of adequate water
supplies in the future for urban, agricultural, and environmental uses in Northern Colorado.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT
COLLINS,that:
Section 1. That the City Council hereby expresses its support for the establishment of a
regional committee or group of government officials, representatives from agriculture,
representatives from environmental groups, and other citizens to discuss and develop options to
ensure the availability of adequate water supplies in the future for urban, agricultural, and
environmental uses in northern Colorado.
Section 2. That the City Council hereby appoints Councilmember Chuck Wanner, Water
Utilities Boardmember Robert Ward, and Water Utilities General Manager Michael Smith to
represent the City of Fort Collins and serve as members of any regional committee or group
established to address water supply issues in Northern Colorado.
Passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the Council of the City of Fort Collins held this
18th day of March, A.D. 1997.
