OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS
ENCOURAGING THE COLORADO CONGRESSIONAL
DELEGATION TO SUPPORT RETAINING
THE NATIONAL BIOLOGICAL SERVICES
IN FORT COLLINS
WHEREAS, 150 people are employed by the federal National Biological Service (NBS)
currently based in Fort Collins; and
WHEREAS, the NBS was created two years ago as a cost-saving, efficiency-improving
reorganization effort within the U.S. Department of the Interior, coordinating research functions that
have been supported and sanctioned by the United States Congress for decades; and
WHEREAS, biological researchers from a variety of government agencies, including U.S.
Fish and Wildlife,Bureau of Land Management, and National Park Service, were combined into one
location,under one administrative unit known as The National Biological Service, now based in Fort
Collins; and
WHEREAS, NBS works in cooperation with Colorado State University and supports a
number of private research consultants in the local area, making a significant economic contribution
to Larimer County and Fort Collins; and
WHEREAS, substantial taxpayer money went into building the NBS facility in Fort Collins
and abandoning this facility at this time would likely negate the benefits of the consolidation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Fort Collins
respectfully urges the Colorado congressional delegation to support retaining the National Biological
Service in Fort Collins as a fully functioning unit.
