OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS
ESTABLISHING A POLICY CONCERNING THE USE OF
THE TITLE OF MAYOR AND ASSISTANT MAYOR
WHEREAS, Members of City Council have expressed concern that the
titles of Mayor and Assistant Mayor shall only be used in conjunction with
official functions and responsibilities for the office of the Mayor of the
City; and
WHEREAS, City Council members have reviewed the use of the title
Councilmember and have concluded that each Councilmember should have the
discretion to use the title Councilmember where it is deemed appropriate;
and
WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Fort Collins hereby establishes a
policy concerning the use of the terms Mayor, Assistant Mayor and Council-
member.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the following policy of the City
Council is established as follows:
1. The use of the term Mayor and Assistant Mayor shall be used only
in connection with official City documents and official City business, or
in communicating the position of the City Council on any particular issue.
2. That each member of the Council recognizes that they may speak
independently on any issue and may use the title of Councilmember affixed
to any statement or communication when communicating as an individual ,
however, such communication shall be identified as that of a Councilmember
and not as a position or statement reflecting a communication on behalf
of the City of Fort Collins.
3. That in the event that a Councilmember has a question regarding
the proper use of the title of Mayor, Assistant Mayor or Councilmember,
such questions shall be presented to the Ethics Committee which will make a
recommendation to the full Council thereupon.
4. The policies contained in this Resolution shall be incorporated
into the City Council Policies Handbook.
Passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council held this
17th day of July, 1984.
