OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS
ENDORSING NATIONAL EDUCATION GOALS AND
CONTINUED WORK TOWARD SAID GOALS THROUGH
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE COLORADO 2000
COMMUNITIES INITIATIVE
WHEREAS, the President of the United States and the Nation's Governors have
adopted an historic set of six national education goals set forth on Exhibit "A"
hereto; and
WHEREAS, Colorado Governor Romer has appointed a Blue Ribbon Steering
Committee to guide the Colorado 2000 Communities Initiative; and
WHEREAS, the national goals are intended to provide a common framework and
vision for education reform in the areas of readiness for school , school
completion, student achievement and citizenship, science and mathematics, adult
literacy and lifelong learning, and safety, discipline and freedom from drugs;
and
WHEREAS, the Poudre R-1 Board of Education on June 10, 1991, considered
and adopted a resolution adopting the six national goals for education to the
extent that they are compatible with the Poudre R-1 strategic goals, and
expressing a commitment to continue to work toward the six goals through the
implementation of the Colorado 2000 Communities Initiative in conjunction with
the Poudre R-1 Strategic Plan; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fort Collins recognizes the worth and efficacy of the
goals to the extent they are compatible with the Poudre R-1 School District's
mission statement and strategic goals; and
WHEREAS, the Council wishes to provide guideposts for cooperation between
the City and the School District; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fort Collins has a special interest in focusing
community involvement on drug education and youth programs because of the City's
involvement in programs such as Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) ; and
WHEREAS, the endorsing of the national goals by local entities is a key
first step in the implementation of the Colorado 2000 Communities Initiative,
whose purpose is to bring all segments of the community together to assume
responsibility for the implementation of the goals.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Fort Collins
that the City does hereby endorse the six national goals for education as shown
on Exhibit "A", attached hereto and incorporated herein, to the extent that they
are compatible with the Poudre R-1 strategic goals, and supports continued work
toward these goals through the implementation of the Colorado 2000 Communities
Initiative in conjunction with the Poudre R-1 Strategic Plan.
Passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the Council of the City of Fort
Collins held this 2nd day of July, A.D. 1991 .

GOAL #1 : Readiness for School
By year 2000, all children in America will start school ready to

learn to use their minds well , so they may be prepared for
responsible citizenship, further learning and productive employment
in our modern economy.
