OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS
ESTABLISHING A CITY HOLIDAY FOR
MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY
WHEREAS, official city holidays recognize significant events and
people who have made great contributions to our society; and
WHEREAS, Congress has authorized an official federal holiday to
provide a time for all Americans to reflect on the principles of racial
equality and non-violent social change advocated by Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. ; and
WHEREAS, the State of Colorado has established an ofricial state
holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King and encourages all cities to
participate in observing a holiday in his honor; and
WHEREAS , the City of Fort Collins wishes to recognize the
contributions of Black Americans and Dr. Martin Luther King to our society;
and
WHEREAS, the options as to how to commemorate these contributions are
as follows:
OPTION A - Establish an official holiday on the third Monday in
January which will be known as Martin Luther King Day.
OPTION B - Establish an official holiday on the third Monday in
January which will be known as Martin Luther King Day. The
establishment of this holiday will eliminate the observance of
Colorado Day on the first Monday in August.
OPTION C - Establish an official holiday on the third Monday in
January which will be known as Martin Luther King Day. The
establishment of this holiday will eliminate the floating holiday
benefit which is currently part of the employee benefit package.
OPTION D - Establish an official holiday on the third Monday in
January which will be known as Martin Luther King Day. Eliminate the
observance of Colorado Day on the first Monday in August, but add a
second floating holiday.
NOW, THEREFORE , BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT
COLLINS that the City Manager be, and he hereby is, given the following
direction with regard to Martin Luther King Day:
Proceed with Option D.
Passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the Council of the City of
Fort Collins held this 1st day of October, A.D. 1985.
