OF THE COUNCIL OF CITY OF FORT COLLINS
SUPPORTING CITY PARTICIPATION IN THE MARK OF DISTINCTION FOR
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT THROUGH YOUTH SPORTS
WHEREAS, pursuant to Resolution 2001-117, the City of Fort Collins pledged its
commitment to character and encouraged its citizens to do all in their power to become known as
a City of Character by promoting character in our schools, businesses, homes, churches, city
government, media, and community groups; and
WHEREAS, youth sports programs provide a unique opportunity to promote character by
reaching young people with values that will serve them and their society throughout their lives; and
WHEREAS,more then ever,young people need strong and constructive guidance from their
families and communities, including schools, youth organizations, religious institutions and civic
groups; and
WHEREAS,involvement by parents,schools,government agencies,faith communities and
youth, civic and human service organizations play a very important role in promoting character
development by teaching, enforcing, advocating, and modeling good character; and
WHEREAS, youth sports programs provide an excellent opportunity and a framework for
developing sportsmanship and good character through organized athletics; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fort Collins, Colorado State University, Poudre School District,
Character Fort Collins, and the Healthier Communities Coalition of Larimer County are acting in
coalition to develop the prestigious recognition known as the Mark of Distinction for Character
Development Through Youth Sports (the "Mark of Distinction"); and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the Mark of Distinction is to make the teaching of many of the
essential qualities for success in life,such as caring,citizenship,courage,enthusiasm,fairness,good
sportsmanship, perseverance, positive attitude, respect, responsibility, self-control, and
trustworthiness, a primary goal for youth and interscholastic sports organizations as part of a
community-wide commitment to promote character development and ethical behavior among the
youth of the communities we serve.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT
COLLINS that the City Council hereby supports the development of the Mark of Distinction
Program and encourages all youth sports and interscholastic teams, and their administrative
organizations, to pursue the Mark of Distinction.
