HomeMy WebLinkAbout1985-008-01/15/1985-SUPPORTING MANDATORY SEATBELT LEGISLATION RESOLUTION 85- 8 OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS SUPPORTING MANDATORY SEATBELT LEGISLATION WHEREAS, deaths and injuries from automobile accidents in Colorado are approaching epidemic proportions; and WHEREAS, the preponderance of evidence shows that currently available seatbelts, when used, are the single most effective measure to protect against serious and fatal occupant injury; and WHEREAS, reliable estimates of seatbelt usage in Colorado indicate that an average of less than fifteen percent ( 15%) of occupants wear seatbelts regularly; and WHEREAS, in jurisdictions where mandatory seatbelt laws have been in effect, the use of seatbelts has increased to fifty percent (50%) and over; and WHEREAS, the economic consequences of failure to wear seatbelts are borne not just by the individuals killed or injured, but by the state and society as a whole. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS that the Council of the City of Fort Collins strongly supports a mandatory seatbelt law to reduce human suffering and impairments and economic loss and hereby encourages the State Legislature to enact such a law. Passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the Council of the City of Fort Collins held this 15th day of January, 1985. Mayor ATTEST: i y ClerK
