OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS
SUPPORTING MANDATORY SEATBELT LEGISLATION
WHEREAS, deaths and injuries from automobile accidents in Colorado are
approaching epidemic proportions; and
WHEREAS, the preponderance of evidence shows that currently available
seatbelts, when used, are the single most effective measure to protect
against serious and fatal occupant injury; and
WHEREAS, reliable estimates of seatbelt usage in Colorado indicate
that an average of less than fifteen percent ( 15%) of occupants wear
seatbelts regularly; and
WHEREAS, in jurisdictions where mandatory seatbelt laws have been in
effect, the use of seatbelts has increased to fifty percent (50%) and over;
and
WHEREAS, the economic consequences of failure to wear seatbelts are
borne not just by the individuals killed or injured, but by the state and
society as a whole.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT
COLLINS that the Council of the City of Fort Collins strongly supports a
mandatory seatbelt law to reduce human suffering and impairments and
economic loss and hereby encourages the State Legislature to enact such a
law.
Passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the Council of the City of
Fort Collins held this 15th day of January, 1985.
