HomeMy WebLinkAbout1991-050-03/19/1991-TOBACCO PRODUCTS YOUTH UNDER 18 RESOLUTION 91-50 OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS DIRECTING STAFF TO PROPOSE LOCAL LEGISLATION TO PROHIBIT THE POSSESSION AND USE OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS BY PERSONS UNDER EIGHTEEN (18) YEARS OF AGE WHEREAS, there exists substantial scientific evidence that the use of tobacco products causes cancer, heart disease and other medical disorders; and WHEREAS, State law currently prohibits the sale of tobacco products to and the purchase by persons under eighteen (18) years of age; and WHEREAS, State law does not, however, prohibit the possession and use of tobacco products by persons under eighteen (18) years of age; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Fort Collins have expressed concern about the possession and use of tobacco products by persons under eighteen (18) years of age. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS that the City Manager and the City Attorney are hereby directed to: (1) research and propose local legislation to prohibit in the City of Fort Collins the possession and use of tobacco products by persons under eighteen (18) years of age; and (2) explore the functional and financial feasibility of enforcing such legislation. Passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the Council of the City of Fort Collins held this 19th day of March, A.D. 1991 . Mayor ATTEST: City Clerk
