AUTHORIZING THE APPOINTMENT
OF THE MAYOR OR CITY COUNCILMEMBER TO THE
BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE COMMUNITIES
IN SCHOOLS INITIATIVE (CIS)
SPONSORED BY LARIMER COUNTY
WHEREAS,the City of Fort Collins has an interest in supporting community efforts directed
towards drop-out reduction and prevention; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fort Collins promotes its role in developing and enhancing the
concept of the learning community, and joint use of school facilities in collaboration with the Poudre
R-1 School District and other public and private entities; and
WHEREAS, the Communities in Schools initiative was established as a non-profit
organization in order to develop a collaborative public-private delivery system for dropout
prevention and intervention; and
WHEREAS, the Communities in Schools initiative provides for a continuum of outreach
throughout the community for families in crisis by redirecting the services of community-based
agencies through the-l'oudre-R-I and Thompson R2-J public.schools;thus promoting self-sufficiency
and drop-out awareness; and
WHEREAS, the Communities in Schools effort will initially incorporate the services of the
Larimer County Departments of Mental Health, Health, Social Services, Youth Services and
Employment& Training in conjunction with the two school districts and eight schools during the
1995-1996 school year; and
WHEREAS, the Communities in Schools initiative is led by a board of directors comprised
of community leaders from both the public and private sectors; and
WHEREAS, the Communities in Schools board has requested the appointment of the Mayor
or a City Councilmember to represent the City of Fort Collins on its board of directors; and
WHEREAS, under Section 2-570 of the City Code, the City Council may, in its discretion,
appoint any number of its members to serve as City representatives to, or members of the boards of
directors of, other governmental or private agencies; and
WHEREAS, the City Council believes that it would be in the best interests of the City to
appoint the Mayor to represent the City on the board of directors of the Communities in Schools.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
FORT COLLINS that Alan Apt be, and hereby is, appointed by City Council to serve on the board
of directors of Communities in Schools for a term to commence on or about August 1, 1995, and
terminate on July 31, 1998.
