OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS
STATING THE CITY'S SUPPORT OF AMENDMENT 1 TOBACCO TAXES
WHEREAS, Amendment 1, known as the "Tobacco Tax" ballot initiative, is a
proposed amendment to the Colorado Constitution that the voters will consider at
the November 8, 1994 general election; and
WHEREAS, this Amendment would remove the exemption from the state sales tax
that presently exists for cigarettes and would substantially increase the amount
of tax on all tobacco products, thus increasing the cost of such products and
discouraging the use of the same; and
WHEREAS, the decreased use of tobacco products would likely result in fewer
tobacco-related illnesses; and
WHEREAS, tobacco-related illnesses draw upon the health care system, and
the taxes imposed on tobacco products would be directed towards health care and
programs to reduce tobacco use; and
WHEREAS, the revenue from the proposed taxes on tobacco products would be
specifically earmarked in the Amendment for important health care purposes and
a citizens' commission would be established to oversee the administration of the
revenue; and
WHEREAS, the Tobacco Tax Amendment was initiated by the citizens of the
state.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS
that the Council supports Amendment 1 and urges the voters to become informed
about this measure and the benefits to be gained from its passage.
Passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the Co it of the City of Fort
