HomeMy WebLinkAbout1994-171-10/18/1994-AMENDMENT 1 GENERAL ELECTION TOBACCO TAXES RESOLUTION 94-171 OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS STATING THE CITY'S SUPPORT OF AMENDMENT 1 TOBACCO TAXES WHEREAS, Amendment 1, known as the "Tobacco Tax" ballot initiative, is a proposed amendment to the Colorado Constitution that the voters will consider at the November 8, 1994 general election; and WHEREAS, this Amendment would remove the exemption from the state sales tax that presently exists for cigarettes and would substantially increase the amount of tax on all tobacco products, thus increasing the cost of such products and discouraging the use of the same; and WHEREAS, the decreased use of tobacco products would likely result in fewer tobacco-related illnesses; and WHEREAS, tobacco-related illnesses draw upon the health care system, and the taxes imposed on tobacco products would be directed towards health care and programs to reduce tobacco use; and WHEREAS, the revenue from the proposed taxes on tobacco products would be specifically earmarked in the Amendment for important health care purposes and a citizens' commission would be established to oversee the administration of the revenue; and WHEREAS, the Tobacco Tax Amendment was initiated by the citizens of the state. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS that the Council supports Amendment 1 and urges the voters to become informed about this measure and the benefits to be gained from its passage.
