HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993-012-01/19/1993-HUMAN SERVICES POLICY SUPPORT COMMUNITY EFFORTS VIOLENCE RESOLUTION 93-12 OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS IN SUPPORT OF COMMUNITY EFFORTS ADDRESSING VIOLENCE WHEREAS, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that one in four U.S. households experienced crime in 1991 ; and WHEREAS, the Bureau of Justice further noted that 5% of U.S. households had at least one member twelve years of age or older victimized by violent crime; and WHEREAS, the City of Fort Collins follows national and state crime trends, but historically at a somewhat lower rate of increase; and WHEREAS, the City of Fort Collins continues to experience the challenges created by incidents of domestic violence, child abuse, serious assaults, and criminal acts by youthful offenders; and WHEREAS, the effects of violence on the community in terms of emotional distress, fear, human suffering and monetary costs are significant; and WHEREAS, it is recognized that the causes of violence are varied and present complex societal challenges for which enforcement of laws is only one component; and WHEREAS, the City of Fort Collins desires to continue its development as a city where all of the people of the community will have an opportunity to live in a safe and healthy environment. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS as follows: Section 1 . That the City Council supports the formulation of broad-based community efforts designed to address the prevention of violence in the City. Section 2. That in accordance with the City's Human Services Policy, the City Council will continue to use its resources and regulatory powers to the greatest extent possible to provide a safe and healthy environment for the people of the community.
