HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-150-11/04/1997-BANNING COMMERCIAL AIR TOURS ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK RESOLUTION 97-150 OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS SUPPORTING CONGRESSIONAL BILL S.1143 BANNING COMMERCIAL AIR TOURS OVER ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK WHEREAS, the City of Fort Collins understands that Senator Wayne Allard introduced legislation on September 3, 1997 prohibiting all commercial air tours over Rocky Mountain National Park; and WHEREAS, the City Council adopted Resolution 96-91, on August 6, 1996, supporting Alternative One(Docket Number 28577) of the US Department of Transportation,Federal Aviation Administration, supporting a temporary total ban of commercial sightseeing aircraft operations over Rocky Mountain National Park; and WHEREAS, the City of Fort Collins agrees with the positions of Larimer and Grand Counties and the Town of Estes Park in their support of a total ban; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Fort Collins, being in close proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park, enjoy its natural quiet,tranquility and intrinsic values on a regular basis; and WHEREAS, 96 percent of the Park's three million annual visitors identified"tranquility" as extremely important and 81 percent of the visitors to the Park oppose tour overflights; and WHEREAS, the visitors to the Park make a substantial contribution to the economies of northern Colorado; and WHEREAS, the opportunity for recreational activities, including wildlife viewing, is important to a quality visitor experience, and wildlife biologists report that the noise from frequent tour overflights has a very high potential for detrimental effects on the many wildlife species that inhabit the Park. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS, that the Congress of the United States is encouraged to pass into law S.1143 banning commercial tour overflights at Rocky Mountain National Park. Passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council held this 4th day of November, A.D. 1997. Mayor ATTEST: City Clerk
