OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS
APPROVING EXPENDITURES FROM THE ART IN PUBLIC PLACES RESERVE
ACCOUNTS IN THE CULTURAL SERVICES AND FACILITIES FUND
FOR THE COMMISSION OF SCULPTURE ENTITLED
"WATERMELON SLICES" FOR COTTONWOOD PARK
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 23-304 of the City Code, one percent (1%) of the funds
appropriated for Cottonwood Park was required to be set aside in the Art in Public Places reserve
account in the Cultural Services and Facilities Fund, for use in the acquisition or leasing of works
of art,maintenance,repair or display of works of art, and administrative expenses related to the Art
in Public Places Program,in accordance with the Art in Public Places Guidelines adopted by Council
in Ordinance No. 47, 1998 (the "Guidelines"); and
WHEREAS, the City is currently in the process of constructing Cottonwood Park, a
neighborhood park located at the south end of Overland Trail Road, south of Drake Road (the
"Project"); and
WHEREAS,the Art in Public Places Board(the"Board")evaluated proposals for works of
art for the Project at its August 17, 2000, regular meeting, pursuant to the Guidelines; and
WHEREAS, based on that evaluation, the Board voted unanimously to recommend artist
Chris Weed's steel sculpture, "Watermelon Slices" (the "Sculpture") for the Project; and
WHEREAS, the estimated cost to create the proposed sculpture, including commission of
the artist, fabrication, installation and contingency for the pieces is $12,216; and
WHEREAS, $7,216 is available for the Project in the Art in Public Places reserve account
in the Cultural Services and Facilities Fund, and was appropriated in the 2000 budget and will be
appropriated as part of the 2001 budget,to provide for the artist design fees,fabrication, installation
and contingency for the pieces for Cottonwood Park; and
WHEREAS, the additional amount of$5,000 needed for the Sculpture is appropriated and
available and from the Neighborhood Parkland Fund; and
WHEREAS, Section 23-308 of the City Code requires that the Board's selection of the
recommended art for the Civic Center Parking Structure be presented for Council review and
approval, because the cost of the art exceeds $10,000.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT
COLLINS that the Council hereby authorizes the expenditure of up to TWELVE THOUSAND TWO
HUNDRED AND SIXTEEN DOLLARS ($12,216) from the Art in Public Places reserve account
in the Cultural Services and Facilities Fund($7,216)and the Neighborhood Parkland Fund($5,000)
for the Sculpture "Watermelon Slices", proposed by artist Chris Wood, the conceptual design of
which was selected and approved by the Art in Public Places Board on August 17, 2000.
Passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council held this 19th day of December
A.D. 2000.
