HomeMy WebLinkAbout020 - 01/21/1997 - SUBMITTING PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE CITY CHARTER PERTAINING TO COUNCIL COMPOSITION TO A VOTE OF TH ORDINANCE NO. 20, 1997 OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS SUBMITTING PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO ARTICLE II, SECTION 1, OF THE CITY CHARTER, PERTAINING TO COUNCIL COMPO ION, TO A VOTE OF THE REGISTERED ELECTORS OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS WHEREAS,Article IV, Section 8 of the Charter of the City of Fort C ins provides that the Charter may be amended as provided by the laws of the State of Colorad and WHEREAS, Section 31-2-210, C.R.S., provides that Charter endments may be initiated by the adoption of an ordinance by the Council submitting a propo d amendment to a vote of the registered electors of the City of Fort Collins; and WHEREAS, on November 21, 1995, the City Counc' adopted Resolution 95-161 creating a Charter Review Committee (the "Committee") and au orizing the Committee to undertake a comprehensive review of the City Charter and to rec mend any amendments thereto that the Committee believed to be in the best interests of the ty; and WHEREAS, the Committee has reviewe the current system of district representation for councilmembers and the majority of the Commi a has recommended no change in the system; and WHEREAS,a minority of the Co 'ttee has recommended that the district representation system be changed so that four,rather th six,members of the City Council would be elected from districts; and WHEREAS, the City C cil believes that the proposed change in the method of representation should be prese d to a vote of the registered electors of the City so that they may determine whether such a c ge would be in the best interests of the City. NOW, THEREF BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS as follows: Section 1.
