OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS
DESIGNATING THE FORT COLLINS BIRNEY SAFETY STREETCAR 121
AS A HISTORIC LANDMARK PURSUANT TO CHAPTER 69
OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS
WHEREAS, on July 24, 1985 the Cultural Resources Board approved the
designation of the Fort Collins Birney Safety Streetcar #21 as a historical
landmark; and
WHEREAS, the landmark designation is based upon the following
historic facts:
1. Car #21 played an important role in the development of a
municipally-owned public transportation system in the City of Fort Collins
prior to widespread use of the automobile.
2. The streetcar illustrates a method used by a small community to
provide reliable and efficient public transportation during the first half
of the twentieth century.
3. The design and construction of the Birney Safety Car provided a
lighter, more efficient streetcar - an innovation in streetcars of the era.
and;
WHEREAS, landmark designation would assure that the complete and high
quality restoration of the car would be retained through the review of the
Landmark Preservation Commission; and
WHEREAS, general maintenance, operation or use of the car on the
proposed route would not be limited by landmark designation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT
COLLINS AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That the Fort Collins Birney Safety Streetcar #21 be, and
it hereby is, designated as a Historic Landmark pursuant to Chapter 69 of
the Code of the City of Fort Collins.
Section 2. That said landmark shall be known as the Fort Collins
Birney Safety Streetcar #21.
Section 3. That this designation shall take effect at such time as a
certified copy of this Ordinance has been recorded in the Office of the
Clerk and Recorder of Larimer County.
Introduced, considered favorably on first reading, and ordered
published this 6th day of August, A.D. 1985, and to be presented for final
passage on the 20th day of August, A.D. 1985.
