HomeMy WebLinkAbout014 - 02/20/1979 - AMENDING THE UNIFORM BUILDING CODE INSOFAR AS IT RELATES TO SPRINKLER SYSTEMS M - ORDINANCE NO 14 , 1979 BEING AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE UNIFORM BUILDING CODE INSOFAR AS IT RELATES TO SPRINKLER SYSTEMS BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS as follows Section 1 That Section 1807 (b) of the Uniform Building Code, 1976 Edition, be, and it hereby is, amended by the deletion in its entirety of subsection (b) and the substitution therefore of the following "Sec 1807 (b) Fire Sprinkler Sprinkler protection conforming to the following shall be provided 1 The sprinkler system shall be hydrautically designed using the parameters set forth in Uniform Building Code Standard No 38-1 and the following W Shutoff valves and waterflow devises shall be provided on each floor In addition to actuating a local alarm on the floor upon which the water flow is detected, such valves shall be supervised by a continuously manned control station or by a central station ( ii) The sprinkler system shall be looped between standpipe risers at the bottom, top and mid -height of all buildings with a maximum of 20 stories served by any loop The installation of check valves shall be approved by the Building Official ( iii ) Piping may be copper or steel with no minimum size of pipe required Solder used in connections shall contain not less than 95 percent tin and 5 percent antimony ( iv) Pitching of lines is -ot required (v) A minimum of two fire pumps independently driven shall be provided and sized for the sprinkler demand and for a minimum 500 gallons per minute Fire Department standpipe operations (vi ) An on-site supply of water equal to a 20-minute demand or 15 ,000 gallons on a combined sprinkler and standpipe, whichever is the smaller, shall a provided This supply shall be available automatically if the principal supply fails (vii) Operation of the sprinkler system shall activate the voice communication system 2 When the automatic sprinkler system described above is insLalled, the following reduc- tions from the requirements of this Code are permitted M The fire-resistive time p e r 1 o d s set forth in Table No 17 -A may be reduced by one hour for interior bearing walls, exterior bearing and nonbearing walls, roofs and the beams supporting roofs, provided they do not frame into columns All office building partitions re- quired to be of one-hour fire-resistive construc- tion by Table No 17-A and Section 3304 (g) may be of noncombustible con- struction without a fire- resistive time period Openings to corridor -2- walls shall be protected by tight-fitting, self-closing doors that need not have a fire-resistive time period In Group R , Division 1 Occupancies, corridor and dwelling unit or guest room separation may be reduced to one-half hour ( ii) The 1 1/2-inch hose lines and nozzles may be omitted ( iii ) Travel distance to a hori- zontal exit or to an en- closed stairway may be 300 feet ( iv) Smokeproof enclosures may be eliminated if each required stairway is pressurized as provic'ed in Section 3309 (h) to 15 inch of water column (v) Spandrel protection required by Section 1807 (b) may be omitted Section 2 That Section 1807 (m) of the Uniform Building Code, 1976 Edition, be, and it hereby is, repealed Introduced, considered favorably on first reading, and oraereu p b- lished this 6th day of February, A D 1979 , and--)to be presented for final passage on the 20th day of February, A D 19791 7T ST (/ Mayor y C erg 1979 Passed and adopted on final reading this 20th day of February, P D Mayor ST City C116rk -3-
