Collins, CO. CTL Thompson Project Number: FC06508 Mr. Rothenbuehler, Our stamped drawings for all Avery Contemporary plans show a column under the porch roof beam. There is no callout for this column. Per our General Notes, page S3 note 7, all columns not called out on plans are to be (3) 2x to match the wall thickness. In this case (3) 2x4 would be used. In lieu of the 2x column a 4x4 engineered wood column may be used with the appropriate base and beam attachments per the plans. This option is valid for all previously stamped Avery Contemporary models. Thank you for selecting CTL Thompson for your engineering needs. The use of (4) ply beams instead of the (2) ply specified on the plans makes the installation of the post cap differ from the Simpson specifications. The revised installation involves bending the interior beam flange 90 degrees and nailing it into the bottom of the supported beam. This reduces the uplift capacity of the connector by approximately 50 percent. The resulting connection is sufficient for the front porches on the Timbervine products. We do recommend that the cap be installed per manufacturer specifications whenever possible. Thank you for selecting CTL Thompson for your engineering needs.
