Re: MST27 Hold-down straps & Porch Post Caps & Bases

Gentlemen:
As requested, we have reviewed the use of MST27 Straps to be used as hold-downs in place of
the STHD 14 hold-downs on the front wall of the garage. It is our opinion that the MST27 straps
attached to the outside face of the foundation and nailed up along the framing should be an
adequate substitution for the hold-downs at the front wall of the garage. Additionally, the
required four hold-downs were increased to a total of six hold-down straps along the front wall
of the garage.
We also reviewed the front porch post sizes, post to foundation and post to roof beam
connections. It is our opinion that the 4x4 posts used are adequate for the support of the imposed
design loads at that location. Additionally, the use of a Simpson AB44 for the post base and a
Simpson AC4Z coupled with an H2.5A hurricane clip for the post to beam connection are
deemend adequate substitutions.
