pergola beam
Per your request a site visit was performed on September 251, 2019 to review the pergola as
installed. It is my understanding a 6x6 Cedar beam was installed in lieu of a 6x16 Cedar beam
as noted on your permitted plans. I have reviewed the 6x6 beam for the design wind and snow
loads and find it inadequate for the existing span. I recommend adding kicker bracket supports
at all 4 column locations to shorten up the beam span. I do not recommend relying on the
fireplace wall at the south end to be of additional support because it is bearing on the slab and
can be subject to movement. Enclosed is a detail of the kicker bracket to be used.
