Our office was contacted by CJR Construction with regard to inspecting a foundation of a home being built at 249 S
Taft Hill. The engineer for the plans was not available for such an inspection. CJR Construction called our office
due to our having a regularly working relationship. Our decision to become involved was to do this not as the design
engineer but rather as a courteously because the engineer could not visit the site. Our office did not make any of the
specifications on the project. We are strictly functioning in this case as an inspection service.
The home was a circular shaped home with a stick framed roof that overall resembled yurt construction but using
more durable and more conventional components. I visited the building site 23 May 2016.
When 1 arrived on site, the foundation was being poured as a monolithic structural slab with edges thickened to frost
depth. The rebar was in place, over the insulation and pea gravel. The rebar was in place, sized to meet the intent of
the plan specifications. The perimeter was thickened down to frost depth with top, bottom and vertical shear rebar.
The preparation of the structural slab, prior to concrete placement appears to be consistent with the home plans.
In my opinion, as a structural engineer visiting the job site, the foundation form layout and reinforcement appears to
consistently meet the intent of the plan specification.
